🦪 🍺 Have you seen the hip "oyster beers" around? It is actually a traditional way to brew #stout and has been around a long time! 🍻 🧪 The shells of #oysters are, just like #mussels, made of calcium carbonate, which is used to adjust the pH of the water when brewing. Tales say #shells were used as a natural way to raise the pH of the water, which influences brewing chemistry and flavour. Some also say the shells were added to clarify the brew. 🦪 They also add #flavour, which is the main reason for many breweries today when adding oysters, and sometimes also brine or meat is included. 👇 Check out this article on the #BillionOysterProject in #NewYork, where #naturerestoration efforts teamed up with a number of breweries to create oyster beers. 🙌 But why only oyster shells? Baltic MUPPETS calls for a true Baltic brew from small #bluemussel shells!

🐚 Do #bluemussels really improve #waterquality? 🙌 YES! 🎬 Blue Research ApS has made a video showing how the water quality in one of Wittrup Seafood A/Ss farms gets clearer and clearer the closer the #mussels you come. This can even counteract dead bottoms, as less micro-organisms fall to the seafloor and decompose. Check it out below 👇

#Musselmonday enters the Asian market, starting with #China! 🇨🇳 🥇 China is the biggest #mussel producer in the world, but it is only a small part of their total bivalve production which includes #clams, #oysters and #cockles. They eat almost all of this domestically, but some is exported e.g. to USA. 🐚 Over 50 species of mussels are produced in China. Main ones are #bluemussels (Mytilus edulis) and Mediterranean blue mussels (M. galloprovincialis) in the north and thick-shell mussels (M. coruscus) and #greenmussels (Perna viridis) in the south. 💪 Compared to European production, the level of mechanisation and efficiency in harvest and production is low. This makes it require even more physical labor. Still, production has increased a lot recently, and today the mussel #aquaculture is 10 times higher than 30 years ago! 💹 Reasons for the development is increased prices for mussels, and also development of hatchery produced seeding technologies. #lowtrophicaquaculture #bivalveaquaculture #bluebioeconomy #blueeconomy
