BASELABS will cease operations on December 31st, 2024.   BASELABS was founded in 2012 to bring safe automated driving to all vehicles. With the best sensor fusion software product on the market, an incredibly capable team, and maybe also a bit of luck, we sold licenses of our technology to automotive customers all over the world, grew from 4 to 50 people and witnessed our software being used in series-production vehicles on the road. What an amazing and rewarding journey. With the transition from L2 to L4 automated driving, we noticed that more and more customers considered sensor fusion a critical technology – too critical not to own it themselves. So, what do you do when your business model does not work anymore? You change it. On May 1st, 2023, our valued long-term partner Vector acquired BASELABS and took over all employees at our offices in Chemnitz to strengthen their development efforts towards the software-defined vehicle. This shift allowed us to offer customers what they had been asking for: full, unrestricted usage rights to our sensor fusion technologies. The demand by far exceeded our expectations. Witnessing leading OEMs, automotive suppliers, and sensor providers competing for our technologies made us proud and is a testament to the great work of all BASELABS employees over the last 12 years. We are more than happy to see our technologies being used for safe automated driving in all kinds of vehicles. On December 31st, 2024, our technology acquisition process will conclude, and BASELABS will cease operations.    To all our former employees, customers, partners, investors, suppliers, and supporters, we would like to say: Thank you for your invaluable contributions to turning our vision into reality. The automation of commercial vehicles is a tremendous request from the market. Business cases appear attractive, and technical issues seem solvable. Still, ensuring the safety of such highly automated vehicles is challenging. This article by Eric Richter discusses the safety aspects of typical perception and planning stacks for autonomous trucks operating in logistic hubs. It proposes a complementary safety channel to address currently used algorithms' weaknesses. This safety channel explicitly handles unknown (aka edge cases) and hazardous objects and ensures that the vehicle never collides with any of them. How do you resolve the edge case challenge? ⚠ A common approach to tackle edge cases is killing them with “miles and training”. The common opinion is “let’s add that to our data set, train again, done.” True for the one edge cases that has been identified before, but what about the next, the one after the next, and so on? Even worse, the more “edge cases” we collect, the less often we will find enough examples of the (unknown) remaining ones. 👉 Few examples result in poor training of the AI. 💡 But if we can’t win the edge case game by collecting more data, how can we address the issues that stem from these edge cases?
