Fantastic participant engagement and contribution at the Community Class last week hosted by 202030 – THE BERLIN FASHION SUMMIT and Beneficial Design Institute. It was an intense 90 minutes of forward-thinking discussion and exchange on the role and potential of media communication to promote and thrive next-gen materials to customers and brands. Many thanks to the entire ISA Next-Gen Materials team, Tom Schneider and Dr. Reiner Hengstmann for their insights into their innovator's mindset: With the 100% bio-based and plastic-free next-gen material HyphaLite, made from mushrooms, latex and cellulose, they are actively driving change and living a new narrative while designing within the limits of the planet and ecosystems. We were delighted to welcome Pheline Roggan and Martina Gleissenebner-Teskey, who enriched our discussions on a new narrative for sustainability communication, as well as Fritz Lietsch from forum Nachhaltig Wirtschaften, who was an enthusiastic and motivating moderator of the event. One of the most inspiring activities we do at the Beneficial Design Institute is our work with Masters and Bachelors students. For the AMD Akademie Mode & Design Sustainability Lab final project, we focused on developing Regenerative Footwear, facilitating a collaborative process between the students, ISA Next-Gen Materials and Trippen. The project, titled “RE_STORY_ING FASHION” plays with Robin Wall Kimmer’s concept of pairing environmental restoration with new narratives of environmentalism. We ask the critical question, how might we design for a fashion future that tells a different, positive narrative? How might a shoe be a container for such a narrative? The students use 100% biobased and plastic-free material HyphaLite from ISA Next-Gen Materials to develop a physical product, with the help of the team at Trippen, who guided our cohort with footwear design workshops and a final assembly day at their factory. Students paired the shoe design with a communication strategy, with the aim to spread awareness about fashion that regenerates communities as well as the planet, creating a holistic positive impact. We are so proud of the brilliant work of the participants!
