🌍 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 (𝗕𝗖𝗥)? BCR refers to a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) process. It’s based on carbon materials of organic origin that create permanent carbon sinks. It only becomes effective when the carbon-based material, such as biochar or charcoal, is permanently stored in soil or other materials. ☂️ 𝗕𝗖𝗥 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗨𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 Biochar production can involve different technologies, feedstocks, and process temperatures. While charcoal can be considered biochar, it doesn’t always qualify for BCR, depending on its stability, quality and use as a carbon sink. 📊 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗸 A main aspect of BCR is the permanence of the carbon sink. The key is determining the share of inertinite biochar (stable for geological timeframes), often measured through a method called Random Reflectance. Right now, indicators like the H/C ratio are commonly used, but standards are evolving. For instance, the carbon credit standard C-Sink is already signaling changes in how biochar’s stability will be assessed in the future. 🌍 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 Biochar Carbon Removal is already making a significant impact. In 2024, biochar accounted for over 90% of all durable CDR deliveries, making it the leading technology in carbon removal.

🌱 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝘃𝘀. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗹: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲? Ever wondered if biochar and charcoal are the same thing? You're not alone! These two carbon-based materials are often mixed up because of their similar origins, but serve very different purposes and have distinct environmental impacts. 🔥 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 & 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 · 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗹 is produced at lower temperatures (typically below 500°C). This allows some volatile organic compounds to remain trapped in the material, making it easier to ignite and use as a fuel. · 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 is created at higher temperatures (usually 500°C–900°C). The higher the temperature the more volatiles are expelled leaving behind a more stable, carbon-rich material. 🌍 𝗘𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝘀𝗲 & 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 · 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗹 is primarily a combustible fuel, releasing carbon back into the atmosphere during use. It has been used for millennia in heating and cooking. · 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 plays a significant role in environmental sustainability. Its primary use is in agricultural and industrial applications. When used in this way, biochar also helps to lock carbon into the soil or into materials, offering a solution to reducing atmospheric CO₂. 🏆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 Both 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 and 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗹 are types of carbon-based materials derived from renewable biomass. While charcoal is a short-term energy source, biochar is a long-term environmental solution, contributing to carbon sequestration, soil health, and innovative material uses. — Source: Simplified definition based on the work of associate professor Oisik Das, Luleå University, Sweden

Biochar in 𝗕𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀 - 𝟮 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 in terms of biochar in asphalt: 🚵🏻 Basel City has several bike lanes using biochar from a local company and 🚴🏻♀️ Enschede city built 3 bike lanes in 2023 amended with biochar. Now we just need the endurance and long-term tests of this bicycle tracks-take your bike and help test the routes ✊🏻 If you like to know more about potentials and restrictions of biochar in asphalt read our full article 👉🏾 https://lnkd.in/eRM-ifqz Take-away a little insight here: 𝗜𝗻 𝗔𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗹𝘁, 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗻 … … improve the performance of asphalt binders at high outdoor temperatures, … worsen performance of asphalt binders at low temperatures Dosage ⚖ approx. 2-10 % biochar is technically feasible more rigid asphalt: add 6 % biochar from coconut shells in bitumen State of Development 🧑🏻🔬 Biochar seems to slow down the aging of the asphalt material, but studies on this are still quite scarce. Also insufficiently studied is: long-term durability, resistance to moisture damage, uv-radiation and fatigue, environmental and economic impacts. Pilot projects with long-term observations are needed. Certification 📃 Regional laws and their technical guidelines must be complied with. European Biochar Certificate (EBC) for biochar material with lowest quality class EBC-BasicMaterials, which also meets the requirements of the EU-REACH-Regulation End Of Life ⛔ Asphalt is a final application for biochar - it is irreversibly bonded Only such biochar should be used that is not usable for any other application due to its ingredients.
