🚀 Advancing AI in Medicine: CAIMed’s Scientific Advisory Board Kickoff 🧠💡 Last week, we held the constitutive meeting of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of CAIMed. We are grateful for the dedication and expertise of our SAB members, including Niels Peek (Spokesperson), Mor Peleg, Catia Pesquita, Dagmar Iber, Anna Vilanova, Maren Lang, Oscar-Werner Reif, and Manolis Koubarakis, who have graciously agreed to guide and support us in advancing AI-driven methods for clinical decision support and drug development. 🤝🔬 The meeting, led by Dr. Georg Schütte, served as a dynamic platform for discussing CAIMed's innovative approach in the development of AI-based solutions for healthcare. We also explored potential collaborations in AI-assisted personalized medicine and clinical decision support, which could further enhance the translational impact of our work. 🫁 AI-based Absolute Electrical Impedance Tomography: Advancing Non-Invasive Lung Monitoring Early and accurate detection of lung impairments is crucial for timely intervention and improved patient outcomes. Absolute Electrical Impedance Tomography (a-EIT), enhanced by Artificial Intelligence (AI), provides an innovative approach to visualizing lung function without radiation exposure. 🔬 How does it work? In a-EIT, electrodes placed on the torso introduce a weak electrical current. The resulting voltage signals are measured and analyzed by AI algorithms to create a detailed map of the electrical impedance distribution in lung tissue. This enables: ✔️ Non-invasive diagnostics – No radiation exposure or discomfort for patients. ✔️ Cost efficiency – Requires minimal infrastructure and resources. ✔️ Dynamic monitoring – Capable of tracking subtle lung function changes over time. 🚑 Clinical Impact: By providing continuous, real-time insights into lung function, AI-powered a-EIT could enable early detection of lung impairments and supports timely therapeutic adjustments. This may be particularly beneficial in chronic lung diseases such as asthma or COPD, helping to reduce complications, optimize patient management, and support faster recovery. On January 30, 2025, the second CAIMed Meet-up, "AI-Powered Approaches in Infection Research," took place at TWINCORE GmbH – Center for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research. With registrations exceeding the 65 available seats, the event highlighted the increasing relevance of AI in infection research.   After a brief introduction by Prof. Dr. Yang Li (CAIMed, CiiM, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover), who outlined the scientific framework of the day, four highly engaging sessions followed:   🔬 AI Systems for Integrative Multi-Omics Data 📍 Prof. Dr. Tim Beissbarth (Universitätsmedizin Göttingen) Explored AI’s role in multi-omics data analysis, providing insights into diagnostics and therapy development.   🦠 Defense Against Respiratory Pathogens 📍 Dr.-Ing. Geraldine Nouailles (Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin) Presented AI-driven strategies for improving the study and management of respiratory infections.   🧬 Machine Learning Applications to Bacterial Genomics, From Essential Genes to Antimicrobial Resistance 📍 Prof. Dr. Marco Galardini (TWINCORE) Discussed machine learning approaches for identifying essential bacterial genes and understanding resistance mechanisms.   💻 Cutting-Edge Technologies Powered by AI in Infection Research 📍 Dr. Saumya Kumar (TWINCORE / CiiM / CAIMed) 📍 Dr. Jalil Nourisa, PhD (Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung / CAIMed) 📍 Dr. @Xun Jiang (TWINCORE / CiiM / CAIMed) 📍 Yuesi Xi (TWINCORE / CiiM / CAIMed) This session covered AI applications in immunology, gene regulatory network analysis, and spatial transcriptomics.   Beyond the presentations, the event provided an excellent opportunity for exchange and networking, facilitating discussions on future research directions. 𝗗𝗿. Wolfgang Nejdl verfolgt CAIMed das Ziel, 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘄ü𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲 𝗞𝗜-𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗻 zu entwickeln und zu verbessern, sowie konkrete Anwendungsfälle wirksam in die 𝗸𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘅𝗶𝘀 zu überführen. • Ein Beispiel dafür ist die Zusammenarbeit von Partnern aus den Bereichen KI, Medizin, Infektionsforschung und Recht zur Schaffung einer skalierbaren, DSGVO-konformen Infrastruktur zur 𝗩𝗼𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-/𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗗. Dafür nutzen sie Federated Learning-Ansätze auf Basis von nationalen Kohortendaten. • Ein weiterer Use Case der Medizininformatik und klinischer Partner zielt auf die Entwicklung eines 𝗞𝗜-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀-𝗩𝗼𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 für die Intensivstation. Ziel ist es, lebensbedrohliche Blutvergiftungen 6 bis 12 Stunden vor Krankheitsbeginn mit einer Spezifität und Sensitivität von über 75 Prozent vorhersagen zu können. Dabei fließen über 70 Features für eine präzise Vorhersage ein, darunter Vital- und Laborwerte, Prozeduren und Beatmungsdaten. 🚀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗔𝗜𝗠𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲!   Another 𝗖𝗔𝗜𝗠𝗲𝗱 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 is behind us—this time with a special focus on 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 and 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 aspects of AI applications in medical prevention, diagnosis, and therapy.   🥼 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: The introduction of the new CAIMed working group "Ethics" led by 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗗𝗿. 𝗿𝗲𝗿. 𝗻𝗮𝘁. Silke Schicktanz and 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗗𝗿. Nils Hoppe, the Ethics working group addresses the challenges and opportunities of responsibly using AI in medicine. Their goal: to integrate ethical considerations early in the design process of AI-supported health applications. Topics include patients' informational self-determination, fairness, transparency, and accountability. By adopting this forward-looking approach, potential negative implications can be anticipated, mitigated, or even completely avoided.   🤝 The 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 are always an excellent opportunity to reflect on our shared research across locations and disciplines, strengthen the community, and collaboratively explore future research topics and use cases.
