cBRAIN: curiosity and passion.
Info
The overarching goal of cBRAIN is to understand the effects of internal and external events on the development of the brain using cutting-edge neuroimaging. We focus on the most vulnerable patient cohorts – children and adolescents.

❗New findings regarding repetitive head impact (RHI) As a part of his thesis, cBRAIN's former medical student Leonard Jung worked on the DIAGNOSE CTE Research Project, which is looking to develop diagnostic criteria for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). #CTE is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by a distinct deposition of phosphorylated tau in neurons and astrocytes in a pattern that is unique from other tauopathies, including Alzheimer's disease. Although the neuropathological features of CTE have become further clarified in recent years, the clinical presentation of CTE is still not well characterized. Diagnostic criteria have only recently been published and lack validation. In this newly published paper, Leonard Jung et al. found an association between the presence and ratio of the Cavum septum pellucidum and repetitive head impact exposure in former American football players. 🧠 Read the full study here in the journal Neurology Clinical Practice, published by the American Academy of Neurology: https://lnkd.in/dmSTv33p

At cBRAIN, we are particularly committed to advance research on vulnerable population groups and have received multiple research grants to do so. In one of our most recent publications, published in Frontiers Journal of Neurology & Neuroscience, Philine Rojczyk (PhD) and her team investigated whether intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration is associated with limbic microstructural abnormalities in military veterans. Further, we tested the effect of potential risk factors (i.e., PTSD, depression, substance use disorder, mTBI, and war zone-related stress) on the prevalence of IPV perpetration. We are very excited to announce that our former student assistant and doctoral thesis candidate Leonard Jung has recently graduated medical school and has officially been awarded the title Medical Doctor. With that, he also published his long-term research project on Perivascular Spaces (PVS) in Football Athletes in JAMA Network Open (see below). Congratulations Leo, on reaching that big milestone! We wish you all the best for your residency and research projects ahead. 💙 About the paper: Exposure to repetitive head impacts (RHI) is associated with increased risk for neurodegeneration. Accumulation of toxic proteins due to impaired brain clearance is suspected to play a role. This novel study investigated whether perivascular space (PVS) volume is associated with lifetime exposure to RHI in individuals at risk for RHI-associated neurodegeneration. Today, we had the honour of welcoming Dr. Clemens C.C. Bauer as a guest speaker in our cBRAIN seminar series. He told us all about his research using novel real-time functional magnetic imaging methods in combination with mindfulness and meditation in the treatment of schizophrenia and depression. Thank you, Dr. Bauer, for this insightful, fascinating talk and it was a pleasure having you here at our lab in Munich! 🧠 #meditation #mindfulnessresearch #neuroimaging #neuroscience

At cBRAIN, we put a lot of value, time and effort into training the scientists of the future. Our junior scientists, PhD candidates and students are an important part of the lab, as they make a substantial contribution to our research and have a significant impact on the results and outputs it produces. This is why, we at cBRAIN, made it our mission to coach and guide aspiring scientists, teach them the required skills to succeed in science, support them in finding their passion-project and advise them in publishing their own work. In honour of today's International Day of Education, we wanted to share with you some insights and background stories of some of our current students. Swipe through this post to learn more about our future scientists and researchers! 🎓🧠 #internationaldayofeducation #students #science

🧠 Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a unique neurodegenerative tauopathy first described in boxers but more recently reported on in a variety of contact sport athletes and military veterans. Not everyone who has a brain injury or who has been exposed to repetitive head impacts develops CTE. In fact, at this time, research has not yet revealed how many or which individuals exposed to repetitive injuries will develop this condition. Swipe through this post to learn more about CTE! #cte #contactsports #neurodegeneration

At an average weight of 3 pounds (1360g), the brain isn't very large, but those 3 pounds hold your personality and all your memories. Brain health is the state of brain functioning across cognitive, sensory, social-emotional, behavioural and motor domains, allowing a person to realize their full potential over their life course. Developing brain health habits is a key way to maintain or even improve your brain's health. Swipe through this post to learn more on how to keep your brain healthy! #brain #neuroscience #neurology #brainhealth

Meet The Team! 👋 Today we would like to introduce our senior scientist Dr. rer. nat. Saskia Sophie Steinmann. 🧠 Dr. Steinmann joined cBrain in 2023 as a senior scientist. She holds a degree in Psycholinguistics and did her PhD in Psychiatric Neuroscience. Dr. Steinmann is particularly known for her work on brain hemispheric dysfunction as a mediating factor behind auditory-verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia translating into the „Interhemispheric miscommunication theory“. Read more about Dr. Steinmann by swiping through our post!
