Cerabyte - paving the way towards the Yottabyte Era - high performance and permanent data storage
Info
Cerabyte is a deep-tech start-up developing a new ecosystem for sustainable low-cost long-term data storage at the verified prototype system level (TRL6). Ceramic-on-Glass media using laser-matrix writing and high-speed microscope reading technology is the foundation enabling the storage of vast amounts of cold data, that is kept for decades to centuries and rarely retrieved. Leveraging semiconductor tool R&D investment, Cerabyte is uniquely positioned, to deliver sustainable, accessible, and affordable EB-scale data center rack storage solutions required for the Yottabyte era.

For those who missed the #iPres2024 live demonstration of Cerabyte media being water- and heat resistant, here is a short clip of the demo: Submerging into boiling water and baking in a pizza oven*) *) we had to tune down the experiment in the pizza oven - Cerabyte media withstand 500°C but the pizza doesn't.

This article by Sebastian Moss from DatacenterDynamics is an excellent read on the need for storage innovation, showcasing Microsoft Silica and referencing Cerabyte. Femtosecond lasers to write data into glass media, whether inside the glass or on the surfaces of the ceramic on glass media. Glass media — storage at the cost of sand — is durable and sustainable, as it consumes no power to retain data and is recyclable. We 100% agree with Microsoft Research that the archive space is underserved and that the industry needs new green storage technologies! Given the focus on AI, we applaud Microsoft for investing in storage to avoid it becoming the next bottleneck limiting the rise of AI… https://lnkd.in/dXKHrciS
