We are holding the EFMC-YSN Publishing Academy (Powered by Chemistry Europe) on November 7 (Thursday)! Register for free here: https://lnkd.in/eeHD8Pix We will cover the following topics across two sessions: -The Black Box of Publishing (Why was my paper rejected; what does an editor do) -5 Rules for Scientific Writing (In-depth writing workshop) -The Journey and Structure of an Ideal Paper -Communicating Your Science (Oral & poster presentations, general communication & networking tips) -AI tools for Organizing and Publishing Your Research The interactive workshop typically requires participants to have a manuscript/draft ready for a one-on-one consult, but in this instance, we shall allow registrants who don't have a paper ready yet. The consult can be discussed separately with me much later on. Sign up now! This academy is especially useful for doctoral researchers and postdocs within the physical/natural/medical sciences.

Flipping it! Changing the #spin-state of the central metal in coordination compounds is a hot topic in #inorganic chemistry. Making materials change their properties in response to external stimuli makes them interesting for applications in sensors, data storage, and molecular electronics. By understanding how the switch works on a molecular level, the groundwork is laid for advancing these technologies. While the concept of spin #crossover (SCO) – one compound switching between different spin states in response to for example changes in temperature – is well researched and summarized, coordination-induced spin-state #switching (CISSS) – where two or more compounds exist in an equilibrium – is a less explored alternative. In their Concept article, Gerald Hörner and Birgit Weber (Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena) detail the mechanism and fundamentals of CISSS, providing a detailed comparison with SCO. Along key examples where changes in the local ligand field influence the spin state, potential applications in smart #MRI contrast agents or as bio-sensors for #fluorescence microscopy are highlighted. Our Pick of the Week, out #OpenAccess in #EurJIC: "Switching Spin-States: Spin Crossover vs. Coordination-Induced Spin-State Switching" https://ow.ly/7CBr50TVoJu Part of a Special Collection on Spin Transition Materials - find all contributions here: https://ow.ly/b2Hx50TVuzt

Ready to simulate some #enzyme magic? Trying to understand how enzymes, nature’s catalysts, achieve their remarkable efficiency and selectivity, researchers are turning to simulating these reactions using quantum mechanical #cluster models (#QM cluster models). By taking the first and second coordination sphere of the active site into consideration, very accurate results matching findings from experiments can be obtained – but #model choice and the exact calculation setup are crucial steps and have to be carefully tuned to the problem. In their Tutorial Review, Sam de Visser (The University of Manchester) Henrik Pak Hong WONG, Yi Zhang, Rolly Yadav and Chivukula sastri (Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati) provide a comprehensive guide for researchers looking to set up their own QM cluster model calculations. They offer step-by-step instructions on selecting preparing their models, running the #MD simulation and choosing the correct QM model. This review is an invaluable resource for chemists aiming to harness the power of QM cluster models in their own work, ensuring accurate and reproducible outcomes. By demystifying the setup process, the authors empower researchers to confidently apply these models to a wide range of enzymatic reactions and showcase successful case studies of how powerful this approach can be. Our Pick of the Week, published #OpenAccess in #ChemEurJ: "Tutorial Review on the Set-Up and Running of Quantum Mechanical Cluster Models for Enzymatic Reaction Mechanisms" https://ow.ly/F97550TSBBn
