"Medchem Musings" essay series: a brand new #ChemMedChem (Chemistry Europe) project ChemMedChem, one of the two official journals of the EFMC - European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology together with ChemBioChem, has just launched a new project called “MedChem Musings”. It will collect various essays, published in the journal as Guest Editorials or Perspectives, covering diverse topics within drug discovery, from traditional medicinal chemistry all the way to novel therapeutic modalities, and the broader umbrella of drug/therapeutics development. The essays will be contributed by academics and industry professionals who are enthusiastic writers and maintain their own websites/magazines/blogs or even successful online information services. With this series, we aim to: -Reach out to the drug discovery community, especially early-career researchers by providing interesting think pieces -Allow great, creative thinkers to share their views on pertinent topics directly to the readership of ChemMedChem, and in extension, the EFMC community The very first contribution, just published as early view article, is by Gilles Ouvry (NRG Therapeutics) and is focused on PK. Optimizing pharmacokinetics is an integral part of drug design, albeit a lesser understood one from the medicinal chemist's perspective. Over the years, molecular tools and experimental strategies have been developed to better understand the fate of compounds. Among these, the use of aminobenzotriazole (ABT), elacridar and bile-duct cannulated rats have been instrumental in gaining valuable PK insights, with a direct impact on drug design. The new issue of #ChemMedChem (Chemistry Europe) is out (https://lnkd.in/dkQcmJY2) with a Front Cover (picture on the left) showing the critical role of arginine residues in G-quadruplex (G4) mediated liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). A visual representation shows an RGG peptide interacting with G4-DNA, forming LLPS droplets. The art highlights the importance of arginine′s specific interactions for LLPS, reflecting the study's insights into the molecular mechanisms driving G4-LLPS.. More details can be found in the article by Daisuke Miyoshi and co-workers (https://lnkd.in/dEJ5YV4X). The issue also includes a Cover Feature (picture on the right) depicting two figures dancing gracefully within a round-bottom flask, symbolizing the fusion of skills in medicinal chemistry education. One figure embodies soft skills—communication, teamwork, and critical thinking—while the other represents hard skills like synthetic expertise, knowledge in chemical biology and drug design. Their synchronized dance reflects the seamless integration of these competencies, essential for meeting stakeholder demands and preparing students for a future as drug designers and medicinal chemists. The flask′s enclosing form signifies the dynamic yet contained environment of academic and professional growth. More details can be found in the article by Dr. Philipp Klahn (https://lnkd.in/d3eg7eQF).
