🚀 Thrilling news! First human implantation of a German BCI is imminent: Our groundbreaking CorTec Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system has cleared the final milestone on the way to its first clinical study in humans. After receiving FDA approval for the IDE study for the treatment of stroke with our Brain Interchange System at the end of May [https://lnkd.in/eapsHsJx], the Investigational Review Board (IRB) at the University of Washington has now given its approval. Thus, the UW team and the CorTec team are taking a further step towards the first human implantation.   What does the IRB approval mean for the planned Study? The IRB ensures that clinical studies are ethical, responsible, and in line with both institutional policies and federal regulations. Therefore, the IRB approval represents a prerequisite for the planned clinical study. This process is both time-consuming and important to ensure the safety of the study participants.   What is next? We are, of course, all the more pleased that our BCI system has now received approval and that the preparations of the teams at the University of Washington can continue. In the coming weeks, patient recruitment will start and further preparations will be made to carry out the first human implantation of the Brain Interchange.   What does the future hold? Very exciting times. New therapeutic approaches for neurological diseases potentially affect more than 3.4 billion people. MassDevice has recently published an article that presents the top 10 highlights from 2024 (so far, of course). Amongst great devices in the #neurotech space, our Brain Interchange System is also featured. Earlier this year the FDA has approved an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) for an Early Feasibility Study for the rehabilitation of stroke patients with our closed-loop implant, which will be carried out by University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. One Step Closer Towards Personalized Brain Therapy Take a look at Martins recent post which highlights the latest breakthrough on the road to curing neurological diseases with our Brain Computer Interface technology featuring the groundbreaking work of Hanbin Cho and Jeffrey Herron, Ph.D. from University of Washington. They’ve developed a real-time, phase-triggered stimulation algorithm that shows the incredible capabilities of closed-loop stimulation and recording systems. Using the CorTec Brain Interchange Evaluation Kit, their innovative approach adapts electrical brain stimulation based on real-time neural oscillations, showing tremendous promise for therapeutic applications using closed-loop.
