The Würzburg-Dresden Cluster of Excellence - Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter
Info
ct.qmat – the Würzburg-Dresden Cluster of Excellence – is a strategic alliance of leading quantum matter research institutions in Würzburg and Dresden. It aims to develop a systematic understanding of topological phenomena in physics, to find and design materials in which these phenomena can be observed in the laboratory, and to identify and test initial applications of these novel materials. The cluster was established by 25 principal investigators from two universities and five research institutes. Today, ct.qmat unites more than 300 physicists, chemists and materials scientists from over 30 nations in their efforts to understand, control and apply fundamentally new states of quantum matter.

🌐 𝗪ü𝗿𝘇𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 Researchers from the Cluster of Excellence xn--vd2h8a.qmat have developed a method to model a central theory of quantum gravity in the laboratory. Their goal: to decipher previously unexplained phenomena in the quantum world. Gravity is no longer a mystery to physicists – at least when it comes to large distances: thanks to science, we can calculate the orbits of planets, predict tides, and send rockets into space with precision. However, the theoretical description of gravity reaches its limits at the level of the smallest particles, the so-called quantum level. “To explain the Big Bang or the interior of black holes, we have to understand the quantum properties of gravity“, explains Professor Johanna Erdmenger, Chair of Theoretical Physics III at the University of Würzburg (JMU) in Bavaria, Germany. “At very high energies, the classical laws of gravity fail. Therefore, our goal is to contribute to the development of new theories that can explain gravity at all scales, including at the quantum level.“ Read what else Prof. Erdmenger has to say 👉 https://lnkd.in/ed8jjiCy Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg TU Dresden Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation #wisskomm #scicomm #science #physics #ClustersOfExcellence #research #materials #quantum #gravity #BigBang

🌊 𝗪ü𝗿𝘇𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱: 𝗞𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 Superconducting Cooper pairs can be spatially modulated in the “star points” of Kagome metals—the “sublattice”—allowing for wave-like distribution throughout the material. Predicted by a Würzburg physics team in February 2023, this “sublattice modulated superconductivity” theory has now been validated in an international experiment, heralding potential new applications like superconducting diodes. Confirmation was provided by a scanning tunneling microscope with a superconducting tip, leveraging a Nobel Prize-winning effect. The findings have been published in Nature. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eFQjPgZU Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg Ronny Thomale Hendrik Hohmann #MatteoDürrnagel Technische Universität Dresden Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation #superconductor #kagome #wisskomm #scicomm #science #physics #ClustersOfExcellence #research #materials #quantum

Under its new name, ctd.qmat—Complexity, Topology and Dynamics in Quantum Matter, the Würzburg-Dresden Cluster of Excellence has submitted its application for the second funding period from 2026 to 2032 within the Excellence Competition of the German Federal and State Governments. The proposal, valued at €70 million, builds on the successes of the current period, which has yielded over 1,300 publications and six patents. To enhance the practical impact of its fundamental research, the cluster is expanding its research focus to include quantum dynamics, an increasingly important branch of solid-state physics. The decision about funding will be announced on May 22, 2025. --- #video #forschung #quantentechnologie
