𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐯𝐬. 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 – 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 For decades, detergents have been the standart for extracting and studying membrane proteins (MPs). But as we’ve seen, they often disrupt protein structure, function and stability - resulting in misleading data and failed drug discovery efforts. 𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭-𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Unlike detergents, copolymers directly extract MPs into stable nanodiscs, preserving their native 𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. But how do they compare? 📸 I’ve added a picture with a detailed side-by-side comparison.
