My #PhD research topic on  “Long-Term Post-Earthquake Monitoring of Urban Areas Based on Time Series Analysis of Sentinel-2 Spectral Reflectance Data” was recently presented at the prestigious 2024 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium #IGARSS24. At least seven people were killed by violent storms and heavy rains that swept France, Switzerland, and Italy over the weekend. The storms brought torrential rain, causing landslides and dramatic flooding across the region. In France, three elderly people lost their lives in the Aube region on Saturday when a tree fell on their car during intense winds, local authorities said. A fourth passenger was in critical condition. We at Disasters Expo Europe extend our deepest condolences to the families and communities affected by these devastating storms. Fantastic couple of days at the Disasters Expo Europe held in Frankfurt for the first time. It was so interesting learning about the latest processes innovative technologies in disaster management and what this could do to save lives. Hearing from world leading experts in the field highlighted the need to focus more on disaster preparedness to save significant time and money in disaster recovery, in developed and developing countries around the world. A need for cooperation across sectors with people on government level, to ground level, NGOs and all the players in-between is essential to utilise knowledge, expertise and experience to ensure that we can learn from previous disasters and ensure we are equipped to deal with those that come in the future. There was also a large focus on the use of AI, drones and robots to detect disasters, act as first responders and provide security in areas of conflict, to increase our capacity to prepare and respond to disasters. Lots of interesting conversations and fantastic organisations, saving lives on the ground. 📢 Within one week, two regions very dear to me have been struck by natural disasters. An ongoing flood in South Germany has claimed at least five lives, two of them in my home region and birthplace, #Schorndorf. Meanwhile, a devastating flood in northern #Armenia has caused at least four deaths a week earlier. Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, their impacts more severe, and the human cost increasingly painful. 💡 When I attended Disasters Expo Europe in Frankfurt three weeks ago, I was relieved to see that industry experts have moved past debates on whether climate change is real or not. Ninety percent of catastrophes are natural disasters, and their numbers are rising. Let’s not waste time and focus on solutions instead: Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Response, and efficient Early Warning Systems (EWS) are crucial in facing today’s challenges. 🚨 Let’s also thank the hundreds and thousands of first responders, firefighters, rescue teams, and volunteers for their outstanding work!
