#Protective #gloves, such as those used for work, sport or household gardening, retrieve their protective function from a special #coating. This coating provides #abrasion resistance, makes the material #waterproof and #resistant to #chemicals or oil, and even protects against #cuts and punctures. Until now, coatings made of oil-based polymers, nitrile rubber or latex have been the main materials used. Using innovative technologies, scientists at the Deutsche Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung Denkendorf (DITF) have succeeded in developing a #robust yet #flexible glove coating using #environmentally friendly #lignin in a #3Dprinting process. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eyjVpZGn 👉 German version: https://lnkd.in/eeMMMt2P

𝐍𝐔𝐎 - the world's first soft #wood. #Materials made from domestic, renewable raw materials are becoming increasingly attractive as they reduce #CO2 emissions, prevent #microplastics from entering the environment and close the material #cycle. A project consortium with the Deutsche Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung Denkendorf (DITF) and the companies Schorn & Groh GmbH Karlsruhe and Ribler Stuttgart developed a new #decorative material made from natural components. The #composite material #“Flexwood” consists of a decorative layer of wood from sustainable #forestry in the form of a thin veneer layer and a textile based on cellulose-based #natural fiber materials, which is laminated to the back of the wood veneer for stabilization. Previously, #polyurethane films or polyurethane dispersions were used to bond the textile and wood veneer in comparable applications. In this project, a #sustainable, new solution based on #lignin was developed as an adhesive system for the required lamination. Lignin is a waste product of the paper industry. After lamination, the thin veneer layer is cut into small segments with a laser beam, leaving the underlying textile #intact. The fine engraving gives the wood surface its flexibility and pleasant feel. Due to the resulting extreme #bending and #draping properties, this composite material can be used as a decorative surface and sustainable #leather alternative in #automotive interiors, interior design, #furniture construction, #clothing and many other industries and sectors. 😎 Lucky those who have air conditioning in this heat! 🌡 These days, we are once again feeling the effects of #climate change and how much more energy is needed to cool buildings. ☀ The disadvantage of conventional air conditioners is that they use a lot of electricity and release waste heat and carbon dioxide into the #environment. ❄ Could we simply use the cool temperatures in space? DITF scientists have been researching this. Technologies such as #radiative cooling offer a #sustainable and energy-free solution. They use the wavelength ranges of the #tmosphere that are permeable to #electromagnetic radiation to emit thermal radiation into colder space. Radiative cooling is a ubiquitous process in which a surface facing the sky loses heat through #thermal radiation. The largest object that emits heat through radiative #cooling is the Earth itself. 🌍 In order to utilize this principle, a #resource-saving #coating formulation for technical textiles was developed at the Deutsche Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung Denkendorf (DITF). The textile coated with it enables ❄ cooling down to 2°C below the ambient temperature, even during the day in full sunlight, while the uncoated reference textiles heat up strongly at a #temperature gradient of up to 20°C. The coating is sustainable, easy to apply and scalable. The matrix material has high #UV and weathering stability and is water-repellent. 🏆 For this research in #SelfCoolingTextiles, Lea Zimmermann and Cigdem Kaya from DITF were presented with the #Techtextil Innovation Award in the "New Technology" category. ❔ Interested in more information? 👉 Read the article published in 𝒑𝒐𝒍𝒚𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒔: https://lnkd.in/eFySEJiu Photo 1: Gerd Altmann at Pixabay
