In a session at the 59th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes e.V. (EASD) called ‘Facing the unexpected: how to fight diabetes when you’re fighting a war or disaster’, Butheinah Al-Sharafi, Professor of Medicine and Consultant Endocrinologist at Sana’a University, Yemen, spoke about the challenges faced by people with diabetes in Yemen, Iraq and Syria. Tirzepatide, the long-acting GIP and GLP-1 dual agonist, has already shown value in lowering HbA1c in the SURPASS trials. The combination of AG019, a bacterium expressing human proinsulin and human IL-10, with the anti-CD3 antibody teplizumab, has shown promise for type 1 diabetes in preclinical research. The first-in-human study is reported in Diabetologia, showing this combination is both safe and shows promising signs of clinical efficacy.
