It has been a busy week for us at EBI. In addition to our CEO representing the consortium at the 8th ICHAR Biochar School, Helmut Gerber, a member of the EBI Board of Directors, 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝘆𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿, hosted by Sweden Water Research in Malmö from October 15-17, 2024. Helmut's presentation focused on 𝘀𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗨 𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. He explained that new data confirms pyrolysis effectively eliminates persistent organic pollutants, such as PFAS. Helmut also noted that sewage sludge biochar exhibits significant phosphate fertilising effects at temperatures between 550°C and 700°C. Pyrolysis technology for converting sewage sludge into biochar is now widely available in the commercial market. This process ensures product safety by minimizing and eliminating organic contaminants through advanced treatment and well-defined process controls. It also has the potential to significantly reduce wastewater management costs, transforming sewage sludge into a phosphorus-rich fertilizer. 𝗘𝗕𝗜 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗥 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 On October 14-15, 2024, EBI’s CEO Harald Bier represented the consortium at the 8th ICHAR 🇮🇹 Biochar School in Florence, Italy. The event focused on the use of biochar in viticulture, exploring its role in improving soil health, boosting crop yields, and advancing sustainable agricultural practices. Other discussions included the contribution of vineyard agroecosystems to climate mitigation and how biochar can improve ecosystem services without affecting wine quality. Harald Bier spoke in the final session of the school, which focused on C-removal and viticulture: the biochar challenge. His presentation, titled Scaling Biochar Applications within the Framework of EU and National Agricultural Policies, emphasised biochar’s potential to address multiple goals in EU legislation, like the prevention of nitrate leaching, enhancement of water retention and soil fertility, and contribution to climate change mitigation. Harald highlighted that the biochar industry has experienced significant growth, with the number of production facilities rising from 171 in 2023 to an anticipated 220 installations by the end of 2024. This expanding market leads to more biochar applications, and the industry is actively exploring new sectors capable of absorbing large volumes of biochar. However, this growth relies on various factors, including political support. Harald stressed the need to make biochar technology more accessible and competitive across various sectors. He noted that as global markets shift toward sustainable solutions, the EU is well-positioned to lead by expanding biochar production. For this to succeed, biochar must be integrated into key EU policies such as the Climate Law, Clean Industrial Deal, and Circular Economy Action Plan. Financial incentives, increased research funding, and clearer regulations will be critical to unlocking its full potential. #Biochar #Sustainability #Viticulture #Agriculture #ClimateChange #EUPolicy #SoilHealth

EBI is one of the 58 companies endorsing the newly launched Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Industry Commitments by the Negative Emissions Platform. This initiative lays a solid foundation for responsibly scaling the CDR sector in support of the Paris Agreement goals. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that we need to remove between 5-10 gigatons of CO2 annually by 2050 to effectively combat climate change. However, current carbon removal efforts often lack the necessary coordination and transparency, undermining their credibility. The CDR Industry Commitments represent a unified effort to ensure carbon removal solutions are transparent, sustainable, and uphold the highest standards. With frameworks like the EU's Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification Regulation developing, establishing clear definitions and boundaries for CDR practices is essential. “As the voice of the biochar and pyrolysis industry in Europe, EBI is committed to ensuring that these technologies are not only understood but trusted as reliable climate solutions. By endorsing the CDR Industry Commitments, we reinforce our dedication to sustainable, scientifically grounded practices that shape effective policies and contribute meaningfully to carbon sequestration,” says Harald Bier, CEO of EBI. Learn more about the key commitments addressing accountability, stakeholder engagement, monitoring, and verification here: https://lnkd.in/eP7d4dh5 This is a crucial step for the CDR industry as it strives to remove several billion tonnes of CO2 annually by mid-century. We encourage more organisations to join us in ensuring that carbon removal is done right and becomes a trusted tool in the fight against climate change. #CarbonRemoval #CDRCommitments #ClimateAction #Biochar #CarbonSequestration #CarbonNeutral
