Europe Needs Copper Now! As Quentin de Hults, Director General of International Copper Association Europe, emphasised at the Raw Materials Summit, opening new mines in Europe currently takes up to 15 years- far too long to meet the 2030 goals of the Critical Raw Materials Act. Copper is essential for mass electrification, which is key to achieving decarbonisation. From clean technologies and electric vehicles to AI, charging networks, and grid infrastructure, copper underpins it all. We need to speed up mining projects, simplify permitting processes, and invest in refining and recycling within the EU and abroad to secure the copper we need for the green transition. Join the conversation on securing raw materials at the Raw Materials Summit, May 13-15, 2025. #Copper #GreenTransition #CriticalRawMaterials #Sustainability #Mining #Europe2030 #AI #EV

Minerals, metals and advanced materials are key enablers to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal. Today, only a fraction of the most relevant raw materials is produced in Europe. This can be changed through a circular economy approach, through innovation in recycling, substitution, processing, mining, and exploration. It is the objective of EIT RawMaterials to secure a sustainable raw materials supply by driving innovation, education, and entrepreneurship across European industrial ecosystems. EIT RawMaterials provides a collaborative environment for disruptive and breakthrough innovations by connecting business with academia, research, and investment. It also invests in future generation of innovators for the raw materials sector through initiatives ranging from education of school students to higher qualifications for industry professionals. The company is committed to supporting Europe’s transition towards a circular, green, and digital economy whilst strengthening its global competitiveness and securing employment. On this foundation, EIT RawMaterials has been mandated by the European Commission to lead and manage the European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA). EIT RawMaterials is an Innovation Community within the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).

📣 Exciting news! EIT RawMaterials invests in breakthrough innovation to secure Europe's Vanadium supply. Finland-based startup Novana, a subsidiary of Neometals Ltd, produces high-purity vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) from slag, a byproduct of steelmaking. The outstanding technology not only mitigates environmental impacts associated with traditional mining and processing but also contributes to CO2 reduction, which aligns with Europe’s #greentransition goals. Europe is a significant consumer of vanadium, which is crucial for manufacturing steel alloys used in applications such as aerospace, defense and in construction. Additionally, vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) are gaining prominence for large-scale energy storage solutions. As the demand for stationary energy storage systems grows, VFBs are expected to play a crucial role globally. The project aims to raise €400 million in a mix of debt and equity financing, managed by SEB, EIT RawMaterials and Aventum Partners. As global tensions mount, the demand for critical raw materials in aerospace and defence has reached new urgency. In her op-ed, Annika Mulder, VP of Procurement Transversal and Space Systems Commodities at Airbus, sheds light on the challenges faced by these vital sectors. She notes that the demand for raw materials for aerospace and defence is characterised by low volume and high criticality, which often causes suppliers to prioritise the automotive industry, leading to longer lead times and higher material costs. Annika outlines three key pillars to tackle these challenges and build a more resilient supply chain. Curious to learn what those pillars are and how they could shape the future? Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ek4hjxH6 Annika was a featured speaker at this year’s Raw Materials Summit. Planning for next year’s Summit (May 13-15) is already underway— mark your calendars and join the dialogue that’s redefining the future of these industries! #Aerospace #Defence #SupplyChain #AutoIndustry #Sustainability #RawMaterials #Collaborations #OpEd #MineralSecurity #Europe #Future #Technology #RawMaterials

♻ Attention! Europe’s First Industrial Rare Earth Elements Recycling Plant Is On the Way! ♻ We are thrilled to announce the launch of the INSPIREE Project, supported by EIT RawMaterials. This initiative marks the establishment of Europe’s first industrial-scale plant dedicated to recycling rare earth elements from end-of-life permanent magnets (PMs). ✅ Why is this significant? According to the Critical Raw Materials Act, by 2030, the EU aims to source 25% of its annual critical raw materials (CRM) needs from recycling to reduce dependence on imports. INSPIREE will contribute significantly to this goal by creating an industrial plant focused on recycling rare earth elements from permanent magnets extracted from used hard disk drives and electric motors. ✅ What’s the goal? The objective of INSPIREE is to consolidate the value chain related to the recycling of REE-PMs and to promote the circularity of rare earths in Europe. The INSPIREE project, based in Ceccano, Italy, is funded by CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency under the LIFE Program. It is led by a consortium that includes EIT RawMaterials, ITELYUM, GLOBECO, Erion, and Università degli Studi dell'Aquila. Join us in celebrating this milestone towards a more sustainable and independent Europe! 🌍 Circular Economy: The Future of Sustainable Business 🌍 ‘No Time to Waste’ and rightly so, as the #CISL 2024 Report stresses on Europe’s dependency on a circular economy to reduce imports, drive innovation, and meet climate goals. The upcoming Circular Economy Act is a crucial step to accelerate this transition. ♻️🔑 I champion our organisation's strong support for the report’s findings. We believe the circular economy is not just an environmental necessity, but a strategic imperative for Europe's resilience and competitiveness. At EIT RawMaterials, we advocate for: 1️. Circular economy being a must for achieving climate goals. 2️. New business opportunities to arise from circular models - better for profits and the planet. 3️. Collaboration between governments, industries, and society is key to long-term success. 4️. Design for durability and product regeneration to minimize waste. 5️. Policies and finance must grow their support and scale for circular initiatives for real impact. 6️. Clear, consistent EU-wide regulations. 7️. A sharp focus on recycling critical raw materials to power the green and digital transitions. 8️. Closing material loops as an imperative for a functioning feed stock system Now is the time to rethink how we use resources for a greener future! 🌱💡 #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Innovation #ClimateAction #Collaboration #Leadership #CISL #BusinessTransformation #FutureofBusiness #Innovation #Technology #ZeroWaste #EcoFriendly #GreenEconomy #ClimateAction #GreenTech #FutureOfSustainability #ResourceEfficiency With joint forces, we can make Europe a leader in sustainability and competitiveness! 🇪🇺🚀 I recommend taking a look at the complete report, which you can find here: https://lnkd.in/edzhAsEP #CircularEconomy #EULeadership #Innovation #SustainableGrowth #CriticalMaterials

"The effects of climate change are real, and we all have a role to play in mitigating these impacts," said Hon. Prof. Dr Kitila Mkumbo, Tanzania’s Minister of State, President's Office, Planning and Investment, speaking at the Raw Materials Summit in May 2024. Africa holds vast reserves of critical raw materials (CRMs), which are essential to the global energy transition. As the world works to reduce carbon emissions, African countries are poised to play a key role in shaping this sustainable future. EIT RawMaterials is proud to collaborate with initiatives like AfricaMaVal to help develop these resources in a way that benefits local communities and supports global sustainability goals. These efforts align with the European Commission’s Global Gateway, fostering partnerships that prioritise inclusive, long-term growth for both Africa and the global community. Don’t miss the opportunity to drive global progress - join us at the next Raw Materials Summit, May 13-15, 2025, in Brussels. #ClimateChange #CriticalRawMaterials #Africa #Sustainability #GlobalGateway #AfricaMaVal #EnergyTransition #Partnerships
