🧒 According to The Economist: "Globally, 22% of under-fives—roughly 150m children—are malnourished to the point of stunting. That means their brains are likely to be stunted, too. 🧠 Half the world’s children suffer micronutrient deficiency, which can also impede brain development. 📰 The article further points out: "Several tactics would work. The simplest is to fortify basic foods, such as flour, with micronutrients, such as iron, zinc and folic acid. This is cheap and can make a big difference." Food fortification has the potential to improve lives, especially at a time when many families cannot afford a balanced diet. Local millers and food processors hold the key to providing fortified staple food at scale. Yet, they require an operating environment that supports them and rewards good fortification practice. This is why we identified six opportunities that can help unblock barriers and realize the potential of food fortification to enable more healthy, productive lives. Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/gqhi2_UJ We are happy to support TechnoServe in backbone facilitation of the industry-led Millers for Nutrition which aims to reach 1 billion people by 2026 with fortified staple foods!
If babies are not fed well, starting in the womb, their brains don't develop properly. This problem is widespread—but would be cheap to fix https://lnkd.in/eDphXqPN

❣ We are happy to have been represented by Tendai Pasipanodya at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's #Goalkeeprs2030 event this week! 💡 3 billion people worldwide suffer from malnutrition, and we are proud to be a part of the Millers for Nutrition coalition, collaborating closely with TechnoServe in building an industry-led collective impact initiative. ✍ Connect with Tendai if you are in New York and would like to know more about our work or Drones Doing Good Alliance. 📩 You can connect with Christian Pirzer to talk more about how Endeva can support you in building impactful partnerships!
Excited to kick off a week full of impactful events at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York! I had the pleasure of representing Endeva on Monday night at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s #Goalkeepers2030 event, focused on keeping people healthy and nourished in a rapidly warming world. Endeva is collaborating closely with TechnoServe as the Secretariat and Coordinator of the Millers for Nutrition Coalition. During the event, Brazil’s President, Luiz Lula da Silva, was honored for his work in significantly reducing malnutrition. His thought-provoking and refreshingly honest speech highlighted how pivotal political will is: “The problem is our leaders don’t have shame.” I always leave events like these feeling even more inspired and excited to tackle challenges from a fresh perspective after exchanging ideas and engaging in discussions with so many insightful people. Looking ahead, some of the events I’ll be attending are the Business Fights Poverty and Unstoppable Africa events and, on Thursday, speaking at a Swiss Embassy event with Swiss Business Hub USA and Swissnex in Boston and New York called Drones Delivering for the Planet. If you’re in New York this week and passionate about addressing global challenges, let’s connect! Send me a DM to arrange a meet-up.

🌟 Yesterday we had the pleasure of attending Climate-KIC's learning festival, the topic was Transformative Funding for Systems Learning 🤔 💡 Some key insights by Will Wade and Nina Strandberg really resonated with us, and we wanted to share for anyone navigating similar spaces of change and collaboration: 1️⃣ Ask the right questions: Instead of asking applicants to define systems innovation, Sida and Climate-KIC found that organizations knew how to interpret it based on their own contexts and that worked better for the applications. A reminder that we don't always need rigid definitions to spark creativity. 2️⃣ Women’s involvement: A simple yet powerful takeaway: ask how women want to be involved. That intentional invitation matters. 3️⃣ Simplify the process: They streamlined the application to focus on two things: applicants simply saying in a short video what they plan to do and sharing their understanding of systems innovation and their challenges. The result? Meaningful, authentic responses. 4️⃣ Learning inquiries: Instead of focusing on KPIs, the funding was framed around learnings and organisations were asked about their learning journeys—what action inquiries were they exploring and how they held up against time. 5️⃣ Co-design matters: Instead of prescribing solutions, systems innovation practitioners were invited to co-design the application and selection process. The takeaway here: the more we can shift power from funders and give it to those who understand their context, the more impactful the solutions. 6️⃣ Toolbox for the future: Looking forward, there’s excitement around building a systems innovation toolbox, empowering more organizations to navigate and implement complex change. 🍃 This year's Systems Innovation conference has just concluded and we're excited to share several 💡 key takeaways from Christian Pirzer. 🤔 Were you at the conference? What else stood out to you? #SystemsInnovation #HumanCentricDesign #SystemsThinking #Wellbeing #Resilience #3DMapping #OpenSourceTools #EcosystemBuilding #SystemsChange #SIConference2024 #SocialImpact
"A system map is a platform for conversation, not a solution in itself." This quote from Joss Colchester truly resonates. It applies not only to system maps but also to the Systems Innovation Conference in London on September 6-7, where I had the privilege of connecting with a diverse community of system thinkers and practitioners from across the globe 🌍. What unites us all is the belief in the power of taking a human-centric approach to systems thinking. We recognize that the systems around us were built by people—and, therefore, they can be changed by people 🔄. A heartfelt thanks to Joss Colchester and the entire Systems Innovation team for organizing such an inspiring event, creating room for both meaningful conversations and self-reflection 💬✨. Here are some of my key takeaways: 💡 Wellbeing is relational: For me personally, it’s about people, interactions, trust, peace, neighborhood, and community. Thank you, Barbara Bulc, for sharing your inspiring work around Reimagining Wellbeing of Communities with us. 🔍 In a world where security economics are shifting market dynamics, managing constraints and building resilience will play an increasingly important role in system innovation. Thank you, Indy Johar, for your thought-provoking keynote. 🧩 3D systems mapping: It's not only fun but also a brilliant way to visualize how small changes within a system can reveal entirely new dynamics and opportunities. Kudos to Hannah Härtwich and Gianne Tillema for facilitating such an engaging session. 🤝 Collaboration vs. competition: Organizations can be both competitors and collaborators - at the same time. Once we embrace this ambiguity, even more opportunities arise. Huge thanks to Dilyana Mihaylova for co-hosting our session on Shifting from Competitors to Collaborators in Systems Innovation. 📚 Open-source tools for system practice: The Systems Innovation Network offers a rich toolbox that equips practitioners to frame, map, support transitions, and build ecosystems. Immense gratitude to Joss Colchester and Sara Featherston for guiding us through it. I'm excited to follow up on all the conversations we started in London, with a strong belief that collaboration is key to making systems innovation work. As facilitators of #systemchange and #systeminnovation, we have experienced first hand how identifying, working and challenging mindsets and assumptions can often make or break the journey towards a reimagined system or a successful partnership initiative. Once that work is done, how do you maintain the nature of collectiveness in partnerships while delivering tangible impact becomes the real challenge. We are always on a learning journey and are excited to learn more on this topic by joining FSG's virtual office hour with Dominique Samari and Paul Schmitz on September 24, 2-3 pm ET, to explore how backbones can effectively work toward this goal. See you there! ➡ Download the report here: https://lnkd.in/evqhATdJ ➡ Join the virtual office hour: https://lnkd.in/eMFwn3UE
"Skills and Mindset Shifts Are Essential for Collective Impact" 🌍✨ Just finished reading an insightful FSG report on Backbone Leadership by Dominique Samari & Paul Schmitz, which truly resonated with my own experiences. Collective impact initiatives often get off track by losing the "collective" or the "impact". In my experience, the real test comes after the honeymoon phase—when maintaining the "collective" becomes increasingly difficult. Partners rightfully want to see tangible results, which often leads to top-down decision-making. This puts pressure on the backbone organization (or partnership secretariat) to steer the process and advise on decisions, rather than facilitating co-creation and collective decision-making. Over the last 3 years, as the backbone organization of Millers for Nutrition, we've worked hard to uphold co-creative design workshops with our partners. Our goal has been to continually evolve the partnership and move forward together as a collective. To me, the gold standard is shifting from centering the backbone organization to aligning, motivating, and managing the network to act together (and more independently from the backbone). This approach, in my view, would make the backbone organization less prominent and further empower partners to take full leadership of the initiative. 🌟 I’m excited to join the virtual office hour with Dominique Samari and Paul Schmitz on September 24, 2-3 pm ET, to explore how backbones can effectively work toward this goal.
