Aufgrund der Herausragenden Leistung der deutschen Fußballnationalmannschaft in der Vorrunde spielt der deutsche Kader morgen im Achtelfinale der #Europameisterschaft2024 gegen Dänemark. Doch Vergleichen wir einmal die dazugehörigen Strommärkte der Achtelfinal-Mannschaften: Die Stromerzeugung in Dänemark ist derzeit primär durch Windenergieanlagen, sowohl Onshore als auch Offshore, und weiteren Erneuerbaren Energien geprägt. Lediglich ein kleinerer Teil der Erzeugungsleistung kommt aus Kohle- und Gaskraftwerken. Atomkraftwerke gibt es in Dänemark nicht. Aufgrund von Netzengpässen ist Dänemark in zwei Marktgebiete („DK Ost“ und „DK West“) aufgeteilt und der kurzfristige Strommarkt wird von der NordPool AS organisiert. Deutschland hat im Jahr 2023 erstmals über 50 % seines eigenen Strombedarfs für das gesamte Jahr aus Erneuerbaren Energien abgedeckt. Die wichtigsten erneuerbaren Stromquellen kommen aus Wind, Photovoltaik und Biomasse. Zudem erzeugen aktuell noch Kohle- und Gaskraftwerke in Deutschland Strom, die restlichen Atomkraftwerke wurden letztes Jahr vom Netz genommen. Der Anteil der Erneuerbaren Energien an der Energieerzeugung in Dänemark soll bis 2030 noch weiter deutliche ausgebaut werden – zunächst durch Windenergie, später auch durch Solarenergie. In Dänemark ist die Energieerzeugung aus Kohlekraftwerken in den letzten Jahren stark rückläufig und ein Ausstieg ist bis zum Jahr 2030 geplant. Auch Deutschland plant den Kohleausstieg bis 2030 vorzuziehen. Die Stromnachfragen in Deutschland soll zukünftig auch primär aus erneuerbaren Energien gedeckt werden sowie aus Gaskraftwerken zu spitzen Last Zeiten. Im Gegensatz zu Dänemark gibt es in Deutschland aktuell nur eine Gebotszone und der Spotmarkt wird von der EPEX Spot organisiert.

I recently had the honour of speaking at the 22nd WINDFORCE Conference organized by WAB e.V., a wonderfully organized conference for the offshore wind industry. I presented a range of possible scenarios for renewables buildout, increases in flexibility, and the pivot towards fossil fuel power plants that can quickly adapt to the current load. These scenarios represent different paths towards the energy transition, at different speeds and with different implications for power prices over the coming years and decades. The highlight of my speech was a deep dive into the possible trajectories for the capture prices that offshore wind parks can realize. Energy policy and financing for the energy transition have a massive impact on what a greener future will look like - and how expensive power will be in it. 🚀 𝗘𝗣𝗘𝗫 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗽: 𝗔 𝗚𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆'𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟰𝟮 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 🚀 Yesterday's technical glitch at EPEX Spot gave us an unintentional but fascinating look into the future of Germany's power market. The decoupling event, which caused massive price variations, showed us what German power prices could look like in 2042 without the balancing effect of import/export activities. On June 26th, 2024, we saw German day-ahead prices soar to EUR 492.04/MWh, the highest since September 2022, while coupled markets like Nord Pool and EXXA remained around EUR 103.01/MWh. This disparity highlighted the potential future volatility in German power prices. Even with increased renewable energy capacities in the coming decades, without matching growth in plannable power plants and cross-border capacities, we might face similar price patterns and volatility as we did during this decoupling event. These day-ahead prices and their fluctuations could become the new norm by 2042. 🔍 This incident underscores the importance of robust market coupling and infrastructure to ensure stable and predictable energy prices. It also serves as a crucial lesson for future energy planning and policy-making. Beim letzten Gruppenspiel gestern hat die #deutschefußballnationalmanschaft gegen die Schweiz unentschieden gespielt. Lassen wir ein letztes Mal in der Gruppenphase der #Europameisterschaft2024 die beiden Strommärkte gegeneinander antreten: Der Kraftwerkspark der Schweiz ist aktuell stark durch Wasser- und Kernkraftwerke dominiert. 53% der Stromerzeugung entfallen dabei auf Wasserkraft, rund 36 % auf Kernkraft und weniger als 10 % auf erneuerbare Energien. Die Spitzenlasten werden durch einstellbare Wasserspeicherdämme sowie hohe Importkapazitäten mit den Nachbarländern gedeckt. Im Gegensatz zu Deutschland ist die Schweiz jedoch nicht Teil des Market Coupling. Deutschland hat im Jahr 2023 erstmals über 50 % seines eigenen Strombedarfs für das gesamte Jahr aus Erneuerbaren Energien abgedeckt. Die wichtigsten erneuerbaren Stromquellen kommen aus Wind, Photovoltaik und Biomasse und nicht aus Wasserkraft. Zudem hat Deutschland, im Gegensatz zur Schweiz, letztes Jahr den Ausstieg aus der Atomenergie vorgenommen Die steigende Stromnachfrage der Schweiz in der Zukunft muss voraussichtlich durch Importe aus den Nachbarländern gedeckt werden. Dahingegen wird zukünftig die Nachfragen in Deutschland primär aus erneuerbaren Energien gedeckt sein sowie aus Gaskraftwerken zu spitzen Zeiten. PPA sellers will appreciate the latest development in futures prices at the German long-term power market. Prices have risen since the end of February, meaning those on market tracking arrangements will be enjoying higher revenues. Currently, the different futures prices hover around the upper limit for bids within the German support scheme (EEG auctions), at around 73 EUR/MWh for onshore wind and solar PV. According to EEX settlement prices from June 18th, 2024, the average value for the next ten annual futures contracts for Germany is 72.10 EUR/MWh.   While the onshore wind auctions have been undersubscribed in the past, there is hardly any incentive for wind projects to enter long-term PPAs. However, high competition in the solar auctions means that project developers may find opportunities in the PPA arena.    There are more aspects than the long-term prices of base products to consider when determining a fair price for a PPA, including capture rate, shape risks and hedging risks among others.
