Global Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB), seagrass mapping and post-storm mapping of beaches - These are the topics we’ll present at #Hydro2024. Meet our team in Rostock-Warnemünde! Apart from visiting the sandy beaches of the Baltic and the fish market, there are 🌐 4 activities we strongly recommend on this year’s Hydrographic Conference: 🌐5 November: Mona Reithmeier’s presentation at 1:55 pm: “Global Satellite-Derived Bathymetry”. She will highlight the challenges and progress in this project funded by Mercator Ocean International. A year ago, EOMAP , Deltares and GGS Geo Consultancy have teamed up to foster European oceanographic excellence. The three specialists in aquatic environments will provide bathymetry from satellite data for shallow waters worldwide. 🌐 6 November: Fugro’s Session at 10:45 am on “Multi-Scale Hydrographic and Ecosystem Mapping: Scaling Up the ISPRA Mediterranean Ecosystem Restoration (MER) Project”. With co-presenters from ISPRA, Fugro and PlanBlue, Kim Knauer will showcase, how satellite data on #bathymetry and #seagrass habitats plays into the integrated mapping solutions of this project, as well as its importance for ecosystem restoration. 🌐 7 November: Kim Knauer’s presentation at 9 am: “Satellites, the autonomous surveyors – Rapid assessment of storm-induced impacts to coastlines” – He will outline how SDB has enabled local authorities to quantify volume losses rapidly in disaster response to hurricane Idalia (2023) in Coquina Beach, Florida. Through a comparative analysis between pre- and post- storm SDB by EOMAP and traditional hydrographic surveys, Kim will show the effectiveness of a satellite-based approach: It can lead to more accurate post-storm assessments of spatial changes for disaster declarations and facilitate a faster disaster response. Thanks to Morjana Signorin and Lindino Benedet of Coastal Protection Engineering, USA for their cooperation in both paper and project. 🌐 5 - 7 November on Booth 22: Swing by and meet Mona Reithmeier, Knut Hartmann and Kim Knauer to discuss how satellite-based solutions can enhance your hydrographic project. Make sure you grab the first issues of our postcard series with eye candy from Space. Here is more on the event and our part: https://lnkd.in/dWmdDhNz In case you won’t make it to Northern Germany, please drop us an email to shallowwater@eomap.de and we’ll get in touch to discuss your ideas. 💦 Focused on lakes and water quality? Then meet Edward Albada and Philipp Bauer at the North American Lake Management Society (NALMS) Conference in South Lake Tahoe, #California! 👉 Attend Edward's talk - co-authored by WSP - on November 6th at 3:55 pm on "Regulatory Monitoring Support by High Resolution Satellite Data in Highly Eutrophic Lakes in California" 👉 Join Edward and Philip at booth 30. 👉 See how EOMAP's satellite technology produces quantifiable data to help you identify "hot spots" within a lake and create a fit-for-purpose spatiotemporal model. 👉 Learn from our partner YSI, a Xylem brand, how to use eoapp AQUA - a smart online tool - to complement field measurements with space-based data in a most effective way. Let's talk about the increased pressure on lake ecosystems: 💦 Elevated water temperatures, as well as nutrient inflow from agricultural activities, can contribute to more harmful algal blooms (HAB); all measurable within EOMAP's processing. 💦 The HABs pose a danger to both the water related industry and to citizens. The ability to monitor temporal changes in water quality parameters is invaluable to understand the dynamics and changes to inland water bodies. 💦 For water industries and environmental agencies, satellite based measurements offer an effective decision support tool. An environmental baseline of the historical context and near-real-time monitoring data result in a fit-for-purpose model of the lake of your interest. In his presentation on Wednesday, November 6th in Session C1, Edward Albada will tackle the accuracy of EOMAP's satellite-based high-resolution measurements of Chlorophyll, Turbidity and Cyanobacteria for Lake Elsinore and Canyon Lake in Southern California. He will also dive into a regulatory and monitoring applications of these lakes with notably different trophic states. And finally, he'll walk you through the practical aspects on how to implement these smart measurements in the operational monitoring routines. If you're not at NALMS 2024, but still interested, drop us an email to wq@eomap.de. And you can always access free demo data when registering to eoapp AQUA - the online solution for "Water Quality at your Fingertips". 📷 Satellite data show changing turbidity levels of the entire Canyon Lake from February 2023 to June 2024. #lake #monitoring #environmental #algae #satellite #hydrospatial #climatechange

🌱 Let us once more shine a light on #seagrass. This small plant has huge impact on ocean health and #coastal resilience. Researchers worldwide agree that seagrass meadows count among the most common marine coastal biotopes, and are hotspots for both #biodiversity and productivity. (Source Nature Magazine: https://lnkd.in/dHVfAtF3) . According to UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre, seagrasses provide many important services to both ecosystems and humankind on over 300,000 km2 and +150 countries: - They are nursery habitat and shelter for fish or crustaceans, thus providing food. - Seagrass meadows are home to fascinating species, such as dugongs, seahorses and sea turtles. - They function as water purification or carbon storage and weaken storm impacts. - Seagrass is a sustainable source of renewable raw material and energy. - Last, but not least, seagrass meadows serve as ecological indicators of water quality and coastal biotopes. To keep these #ecosystems healthy, we need to understand their coverage, health status, and development. This is why ISPRA – on behalf of the Italian Ministry for the Environment – is mapping coastal and marine habitats as part of the "Marine Ecosystem Restoration" (MER) project along 8,000 kilometers of the Italian coast, from 2024 to 2026. Special focus is being given to Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and #Natura2000 sites. EOMAP - as a partner for the project consortium led by Fugro – contributes to this farsighted endeavour by mapping habitats of #Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa from Space. These satellite-based measurements are a key component of the project. Along with satellite-based mapping and monitoring seagrass meadows we provide 🌱 spatio-temporal information which refers to seagrass and defines both its biomass build-up and health. 🌱 These include ongoing analysis on water clarity and eutrophication and seabed parameters (using eoapp AQUA) 🌱 as well as sediment dynamics on the seabed (using eoapp SDB-Online). Please get in touch with us or read more on habitat mapping here: https://lnkd.in/dNJXa-R4 📷 The image (courtesy of Fugro) shows preliminary classification details of two seagrass species we have mapped along the Ligurian coast. #healthyocean #EUBiodiversity #HabitatsDirective #hydrospatial #remotesensing #environmental #bluecarbon #oceandecade #detectmore

💡 #EUStateoftheWater, an alarming new report is out: It states that the health of our waters is not good at all and highlights the challenges ahead. Well, remote sensing can help substantially. According to the European Environment Agency (EEA) 💦 only 37% of all European surface waters were in good or very good ecological status in 2021, with hardly any improvement compared with 2015. 🤢 The majority of these more than 120.000 surface waters suffers from pollution or overuse, predominantly from coal-powered energy generation and agriculture. 💦 This often leads to habitat degradation, whilst climate change impacts increase pressure on water resources. Leena Yla-Mononen – EEA’s Executive Director is calling us to action: “We need to redouble our efforts to restore the health of our valued rivers, lakes, coastal waters, and other water bodies and to make sure this vital resource is resilient and secure for generations to come.” We are convinced that all actions to keep up or bring back water quality should be based on a deep understanding of these water #ecosystems. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 – 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆. Well, here we are, with what we can do best: 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. These analyses from Space enable you: ✅ to time- and cost saving monitoring of all kinds of water bodies across borders ✅ to cover large areas with 1000s of lakes or entire river catchments ✅ to look back up to 40 years in time to identify changes and trends ✅ to see upcoming threats ahead, providing valuable time savings to get prepared. Several regional German authorities, but also industry partners, such as YSI, a Xylem brand have realised the value of satellite-based measurements and pioneer the field. They use EOMAP’s #eoapp AQUA for simple and quick access to satellite-based knowledge about rivers and lakes. Test eoapp AQUA and access free demo regions here: https://lnkd.in/dY4tDShN Learn more about our analysis on the Oder River here: https://lnkd.in/e2sNBYye Download EEA’s full report here: https://lnkd.in/dUkiAwUq 📷 The image shows Chlorophyll measurements along the River Oder during the fish kill in the summer 2022 (see EEA-report, page 56). Remote sensing could have helped the Polish authorities see the upcoming algal blooms and – with the right decision-making – even avoid the disaster.
