What is at the heart of EWOR? 🫂 Ecosystem and Education. The EWOR ecosystem is a collection of like-minded individuals, from investors through to operators through to founders, actively helping one another to change the world. Education (and cross-mentorship) is what fuels the EWOR ecosystem. 🚀 With that in mind, we are excited to share our revamped Founder’s Resources which have been created by our leadership team, a group of former unicorn founders. Why share these resources with everyone? We are not about gatekeeping. We believe that it is immensely useful for all early founders to receive free, foundational support. 📄 Our resources include templates for financial modelling, legal contracts and pitching. 📈 More actively, we have compiled search matrixes for co-founders and grant opportunities, as well as personal development quizzes and a productivity bible. Imagine not sitting behind a desk before age 13 and going on to publish 10 papers in physical chemistry (with 2 patents pending). Meet our fellow, Natalie Pace. 🐄 Growing up, Natalie attended a Montessori school with no formal teachers, self-directing her learning via hands-on activities. When she was 8, a friend brought a cow stomach to school. Natalie dissected it. Her early passion for understanding the physical world led her to Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, where she placed 6th in the national academic decathlon in her senior year. 🔬 Then, as an undergrad, she fell in love with physical chemistry. After an internship at the University of Oregon researching carbon nanotubes with scanning tunneling microscopy, she felt that she “had” to do a PhD. ⚡️ Natalie pursued that PhD at the University of Colorado Boulder, focused on splitting excitons for solar panel applications. Whilst studying, she co-founded the Alt-E Fund to support clean energy research. She recruited scientists from National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Stanford University and ARPA-E to her leadership team, pitched to politicians and raised $200k in government funding. 🧪 Shortly after receiving her PhD, and while recovering from a fairly serious bacterial infection, she realised that her research on solar cells could actually be applied to biological problems. 🚀 This led her, in turn, to a prestigious fellowship at Los Alamos National Laboratory (with a $200k grant), where she brought together her research projects in photophysics and biosciences. From there, Natalie joined Pattern Bioscience and led the development of a first-in-class rapid diagnostic test for bacterial pneumonia. 👏 That test will reduce the standard time of 3-5 days for diagnosing bacterial pneumonia to a matter of hours. Obsessed with learning new things and building, Natalie is now figuring out what she will do next. One thing is clear: we are extremely lucky that she is doing that with EWOR. #EWOR #entrepreneur #deeptech

The definition of "ecosystem": 🫂 This morning, our Chief Investment Officer, Florian Huber, became patient #1 of our fellow Tim Seithe's health-tech startup, aeon, at its Munich practice. Let's go Tim Seithe! 🚀

Professor of Engineering, exited founder, plays 5 instruments, college athlete. Meet our fellow, Konstantinos (Kostas) Fetfatsidis. 🛩️ After finishing his PhD, Kosta spent 6 years leading manufacturing R&D at Aurora Flight Sciences. Simultaneously, he served as an Adjunct Professor in Mechanical Engineering at University of Massachusetts Lowell. 🚀 When Kosta recognised that the technologies which he was developing at Aurora to enhance the efficiency of aerostructure manufacturing could be applied to 3D printing, he left Aurora and founded Make Composites, Inc. Within 2 years of launch, Make Composites, Inc. was acquired by Desktop Metal. This was their first and only ever acquisition (at that time). 📈 Kosta then served as VP of Composite Products at Desktop Metal. In 2 years, he helped to take the company to IPO at a $2.5bn valuation, raising $550m and acquiring 12 more companies in the space of 12 months. 🔃 Looking for a new challenge, Kosta left Desktop Metal to help a Series A Swiss startup, 9T Labs, expand to the U.S. In his first year, while also completing an Executive MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, over 1/3 of the company's revenue came from U.S customers. 🌔 When we asked him Kosta why he keeps going back to building, he (quite sincerely) paraphrased JFK: “𝑾𝒆 𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒐 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒐𝒏, 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒚, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅”. (Ironically, in the same year he founded Make Composites, Inc., Kosta led a 13-month NASA-funded program. This post could be double the length. We’ve skipped a lot.) ⚡️ Kosta is now looking to build more software that drives hardware, perhaps in the energy transition space. 🎤 If he wasn’t a founder, he may have been a music artist. (Only 2 years ago, he proudly played on stage with the Greek superstar, Melina Aslanidou.) We’re lucky that didn’t happen.
