Stop motion icon Henry Selick was the guest of honor of this year‘s Campus Opening Week at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg GmbH Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg, Germany – invited by Jan Pinkava, Head of Animationsinstitut and FMX - Film & Media Exchange Conference Chair. Henry showed excerpts from animation classics like „Coraline“and „The Nightmare Before Christmas“ and inspired the students with his art and his free spirit. „This is a great opportunity to find out who you are and what you have to say“, Henry proclaimed, who has remained artistically independent throughout most of his career.
💬 “𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘢𝘺.” We are not exaggerating when we say how exciting it was to have renowned stop-motion director Henry Selick on our campus to open the new semester. Selick is one of the leading creative talents in stop-motion animated film, with a passionate fan base spanning more than thirty years. 🎞️ A “Hollywood outsider” with an uncompromising spirit, Henry Selick has repeatedly realised distinctive, original films throughout his unconventional career. His work is known for its unsentimental and sometimes unsettling sensibility, often with rebellious, non-conformist protagonists. Selick’s films appeal to a wide audience, while maintaining strong artistic integrity. His feature films include THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1993), JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH (1996), CORALINE (2009) and WENDELL AND WILD (2022). 🫶 Thank you, Henry, for encouraging our new students in your opening speech, sharing further insights into your career and mentoring the next generation of filmmakers. 🧩🧩 Reuniting a country in animation The animated series “Fritzi & Sophie" takes the audience back to the year 1989, when the wall came down, that had divided Germany for decades. The series is a followup to the 2019 feature animation “Fritzi – eine Wendewundergeschichte”. 🎞️ In eight episodes, the directors and producers Ralf Kukula, Matthias Bruhn and Thomas Meyer-Hermann tell the story of a friendship in the last weeks before reunification – with hundreds of characters, true-to-life locations in East and West and a production value of great cinema. 💬 At FMX - Film & Media Exchange, the three of them explained how they managed the task of realizing a project of this size entirely in Germany with a young team. They worked with a special pipeline: Motion capture / CGI with Blender / cartoon shading. They were joined on stage by Anke Lindemann, who as a producer came up with the idea for a series when the “Fritzi” movie was released in 2019. 🔎The FMX presentation went way beyond animation production – the four panelists, two of them born in East Germany and two in West Germany, also shared their reunification experiences with the audience. ✅ Matthias Bruhn is CEO, Art Director and Director of Trickstudio Lutterbeck GmbH in Cologne. He studied Graphic-Design in Düsseldorf, directed over 25 short films and the animation movie “Fritzi – A Revolutionary tale” (2019). ✅ Ralf Kukula has his roots in the DEFA studio for animated films. He founded Balance Film in 1993 and has been making animated, feature and documentary films for cinema and TV ever since. He has been an honorary member of the DEFA Foundation, the Saxon Cultural Senate, the German Film Academy and other organisations for decades. ✅ Anke Lindemann is head of the “Children and Family” editorial department at t he public TV station MDR MITTELDEUTSCHER RUNDFUNK. She studied at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. ✅Thomas Meyer-Herrmann produces personal shorts, music videos, commissioned films, and TV series at Studio Studio Film Bilder in Stuttgart, where he studied Graphic-Design at the Academy of Arts. He is the producer and the main character of Andreas Hykade’s series „TOM & the Slice of Bread with Strawberry Jam & Honey“. 📺 “Fritzi & Sophie” will be broadcast on the German children’s channel KiKA von ARD und ZDF starting October 3. #FMX2024 #tvseries #animation #filmmaking
