Forests cover nearly one third of the land on earth. They provide, directly or indirectly, important health benefits for all people. Around 4 billlion people even depend on forest goods and services such as woodfuel, medicines, employment and income. But did you know that forests and #FoodSecurity are deeply interconnected? 🌱 On #InternationalDayOfForests, let’s take a moment to recognize their crucial role—and explore how preserving forests means securing our food future. 🌾🌳 How exactly? Let’s have a look.👇 . . . . . . Welthungerhilfe (WHH) Meo Carbon Solutions Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V. (FNR) Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft

Realizing the human right to food in agricultural supply chains
Info

A big thank you to all participants of our recent Food Security Standard (FSS) training sessions on Nutrition Education and Decent Working Conditions on 25–26 February 2025! These interactive sessions brought together companies already implementing FSS and those exploring its potential. 🌾 Nutrition Education – Linking food security with workplace nutrition, identifying training needs, and developing locally adapted materials. 👨🌾 Decent Working Conditions – Understanding ILO principles, living wages, grievance mechanisms, and compliance with FSS criteria. A key takeaway: Our participants were highly engaged in discussions such as breastfeeding rights and maternity leave of workers, emphasizing the need for fair, inclusive and food secure workplaces. Nearly a year and a half ago, the Food Security Standard (FSS) achieved a significant milestone by awarding its first certificate to Gremca Agricultura y Energía Sostenible following its successful audit under the ISCC - International Sustainability and Carbon Certification EU and PLUS schemes, using the Food Security Add-On. But where is Gremca now? As the first company ever certified under the FSS, Gremca continues to set an example in aligning agricultural production with human rights due diligence and sustainability. Palm oil plays a key role in Colombia's economy, yet food insecurity remains a challenge in palm-oil-producing regions, like the César department where Gremca operates. By integrating FSS into its existing ISCC certification, Gremca has demonstrated that responsible production can align environmental compliance and social criteria centering on the right to food. What have been the key achievements in Gremca's certification journey since the first audit in 2023? 🎯 Enhanced Food Security Measures — Since its first audit, Gremca has continued to expand its onsite food gardens for the workers, improved its canteen services and conducted nutrition training for workers 🔄 Stakeholder Engagement — After such a successful experience with stakeholder engagement during the first audit, Gremca has further strengthened its partnerships with community representatives, local authorities and smallholders to assess social impacts 🚀 Continuous Improvement — Gremca has implemented additional sanitation and water access points Gremca is a model for the industry — by prioritizing food security within its sustainability strategy, it is paving the way for other agribusinesses to integrate human rights into certification processes. Congratulations to Gremca on your continued achievements 🎉 Let's continue working towards a future where food security is a cornerstone of sustainable agriculture. "There is no sustainability without Food Security," says Dr. Norbert Schmitz, the managing director at Meo Carbon Solutions and ISCC - International Sustainability and Carbon Certification, during the ISCC Global Sustainability Conference. During his Welcome Address, Dr. Schmitz provided an update on ISCC and the Food Security Standard (FSS). He went on to highlight the importance of the FSS within ISCC's mission to reduce GHG emissions and ensure certified and traceable supply chains. Dr. Schmitz noted that the FSS, as an add-on to ISCC's certification system, enables companies to fulfil due diligence requirements while promoting compliance with legal standards. He specifically recommends the FSS Add-On to help address human rights due diligence (#HRDD) as required by #EUDR and #CSDDD. The FSS highly appreciates Dr. Schmitz's welcome address and looks forward to our continued collaboration toward even stronger human rights-based supply chains! #Sustainability #ISCC #FoodSecurity #HumanRights #DueDiligence #ZeroHunger

🌍 Yesterday, our team member Laura Mack had the chance to attend FRUIT LOGISTICA in Berlin—a fantastic opportunity to connect with agricultural practitioners on the crucial issues of human rights and the right to food within agricultural production. There were many insightful discussions with companies eager to promote #humanrights within their supply chains. It’s clear that these topics are gaining momentum, and the growing interest from both producers and certification bodies was inspiring. A special thank you to IPD - Import Promotion Desk and Thomas Derstadt, Dorra Zairi, Angie Martinez and Lasse Lohmann for facilitating connections with a variety of companies! Highlights from the day included: 🥭 Met producers from around the world—from the Brazilian companies SGB Brazil and Eduardo Krominski producing ginger, Lina Frutas producing fresh mangoes and grapes, as well as Viva Agrícola producing watermelon & melons to Eco Fields Organics by George Muigai from Kenya producing fresh avocados and COLOMBIAN FRUIT GROUP - CFG growing maracujas. Many showed a proactive interest in addressing the right to food for their workers and incorporating the Food Security Standard (FSS) into their supply chains. A special thank you to Lina Frutas and Priscilla Nasrallah, it was wonderful to finally in person and discuss the possibility of an FSS implementation after previously connecting online! 🍍 A productive exchange with ABRAFRUTAS ASSOCIAÇÃO on how the FSS could benefit Brazilian fruit exporters entering the European market. 🍉 Great conversations with Nolan Quiros and Alison Jobic from GLOBALG.A.P. c/o FoodPLUS GmbH as well as Maura Maxwell from Fruitnet on the role of food security and the human right to food in agricultural production. 🌿 Insightful discussion with Anantha Peramuna, PhD and Julie Schack Petersen from Nature Preserve on how human rights considerations and especially the right to food can be combined with environmental sustainability in supply chains. A key moment was the panel discussion on smallholder farmers organized by Global GAP. During the round of questions to the audience, we used the opporunity to emphasize that while smallholders produce 30% of the world’s food (a number shared by Elmé Coetzer-Boersma), many still face food insecurity. All participants, including Janine Basso Lisboa, Elmé Coetzer-Boersma and Manal Saleh, agreed on the growing importance of smallholders in global supply chains. As Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and Meo Carbon Solutions, we believe ensuring their food security is a vital step toward sustainable supply chains. We look forward to continuing these conversations and supporting companies in integrating the Food Security Standard into their practices! 🌱 #FoodSecurity #SustainableAgriculture #FruitLogistica2025 #RightToFood Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V. Swantje Nilsson—Head of the Directorate-General for EU-Affairs, CAP, International Cooperation and Global Food Security at Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft—gave her closing remarks during our expert panel at this year's Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) and highlighted the important role food security and the right to food play in upholding human rights in supply chains: "To scale up social sustainability, we need long-term commitment from companies and local producers of agricultural goods. This is the moment for businesses to recognize that addressing human rights risks, particularly the right to food, not only fulfills ethical responsibilities but also mitigates economic risks. Let's mainstream human rights in supply chains—it's time to set up successful business models to harvest the benefits of sustainability and responsibility." A big thank you to all speakers and participants who joined our panel at the GFFA 2025 to explore how biomass production can be aligned with human rights due diligence and food security. The discussion made it clear: responsible supply chains are key to a socially sustainable future. 🔍 Missed the session? A big thank you to IPD - Import Promotion Desk for inviting our colleague Laura Mack to join their pre-fair workshop ahead of FRUIT LOGISTICA in Berlin! Laura had the opportunity to gain valuable insights into how producers from the Global South can best approach buyers in the European Union and the importance of certification was highlightedin the presentation. It was also a great occasion for us to introduce the Food Security Standard to a delegation from Ghana, including farmers growing pineapples, mangoes, cashews, and more. The discussion was highly engaging, with many thoughtful questions on how to implement the FSS in practice. We truly appreciate the chance to connect personally with producers and stakeholders, fostering direct exchanges about the role of food security in sustainable supply chains. Looking forward to more conversations throughout Fruit Logistica! sequa gGmbH Welthungerhilfe (WHH) Meo Carbon Solutions Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V. 🌟 We had the pleasure of hearing from Pia L., Senior Sustainability Manager at 4C Services, at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA). We would like to thank her for sharing her expertise on strengthening human rights due diligence obligations in coffee and cocoa supply chains. Pia also explained how independent certification systems like 4C can promote sustainable practices and improve compliance. ☕🍫 4C is an independent and internationally recognized sustainability standard for coffee and cocoa. Its certification system is built on the three pillars of sustainability: economic, social, and environmental. It focuses on fair and ethical practices, improving the quality of life for workers, and contributing to a more just and equitable society under the social pillar. The FSS works alongside systems like 4C by offering a holistic Add-On certification to strengthen #HRDD compliance further. During her presentation, Pia emphasized that independent third-party certifications like 4C and FSS are powerful tools that help companies meet their due diligence obligations. As Pia noted, certifications are "not a buy-out for companies." Instead, they provide accountability and encourage continuous improvement, driving sustainable practices across supply chains. We agree with Pia's assessment that responsible supply chain governance is critical to building ethical and sustainable trade systems. #Sustainability #FoodSecurity #Coffee #Cocoa #GFFA Welthungerhilfe (WHH) | Meo Carbon Solutions | Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft | Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V.
