With decades of experience in casting materials, the Foundry Technology Department of the Clausthal University of Technology (#FT_TUC) is constantly striving to develop new benchmarks for the standards of tomorrow. The combination of academic teaching, fundamental and application-oriented industrial research enables us to look at current challenges in the foundry industry from multiple points of view. In addition to the theoretical fundamentals, the lectures focus on application-oriented knowledge transfer. To expand practical skills, students are offered extensive model-scaled research internships as well as excursions to foundry industries. The constant exchange with our industrial partners guarantees high potential for the integration of fundamental research-based topics in future operational application fields of the foundry industry. The extensive range of competencies in complex topics of material analysis, alloy development, and heat treatment of casting materials make the #FT_TUC a strong research partner of the foundry industry. VDG Zusatstudium – VDG Academy 📚 Continuous professional training and development are key to staying relevant and adequately prepared in today’s rapidly evolving industries and work environment. Employees and employers alike have a vital role in ensuring their personnel is well-equipped with up-to-date knowledge and skills and they are conversant with current industrial practices and trends. By so doing, their overall competence is enhanced, thereby, boosting productivity, expertise, and innovation in the workplace. As part of the ongoing “Further Training” organized by the academic branch of the Association of German Foundry Professionals (VDG-Akademie), the Department of Foundry technology - Institute of Metallurgy -TU Clausthal, was pleased to host the three-day training event at our chair. In addition to the rich lecture on cast iron, metallurgy, characterization, etc., and the interesting interactive sessions, participants had a first-hand practical experience of the whole value chain of foundry technology process (from melting, casting, metallography, microstructure characterization, among others). Introducing MagmaSoft 6.0 🔥 A quick improvement to our previous simulation earlier posted has been accomplished using the new MagmaSoft 6.0 software. The design has been refined to achieve laminar fluid flow and reduce turbulence by incorporating additional channels. MagmaSoft 6.0 software offers a user-friendly interface with powerful capabilities. It studies not just the mold filling and solidification process, but also tracks the flow of tracer elements, gives insight into potential porosity at specific locations, and much more. MagmaSoft 🔥 Software solutions and simulations are key to optimizing production processes. They can improve profitability by reducing component, labor, and material costs, driving sustainability, and enhancing energy efficiency by over 30% when harnessed properly. Unlike the serendipitous or trial-and-error approach, only promising and well-articulated designs from simulations are implemented. To enhance our in-house capacity for casting simulations, a member of our team, Chukwuemeka Lucky Ihemaguba attended an intensive one-week training last week at MAGMA Gießereitechnologie GmbH headquarters in Aachen, Germany. MagmaSoft is a powerful casting process simulation software with a rich and well-structured database. The training covered the basics and functions of the software, as well as process training on cast iron. These were applied to different casting scenarios and parameters. The video below showcases one such simulation developed for the mold-filling process during the casting of an alloy in a Furan mold. (Note: There is turbulence in the flow; the gating system needs to be redesigned to ensure smooth flow.) 📚 SPCI-XIII 2024 in Krakow 🇵🇱 This year, the SPCI-XIII Symposium took place in Krakow. Scientists from research and industry from all over the world gave exciting presentations on the current technical developments in the field of cast iron. The speakers included the keynote speakers Prof. Hideyuki Yasuda (https://lnkd.in/evcgrFqe) from Kyoto University, Prof. Doru M. Stefanescu from the University of Alabama and Prof. Babette Tonn from the Clausthal University of Technology. In addition to the scientific exchange, the international symposium offered an excellent opportunity to make new contacts with scientists from all over the world and to maintain existing cooperations. The excellent organisation of the symposium ensured an appealing mix of scientific topics and entertainment. An exciting programme was also offered outside of the lectures. Among other things, participants were introduced to the beautiful city of Krakow. The #FT_TUC team was also represented this year. New member of our FT_TUC-Team 🌟 Christian Voelter studied mechanical engineering at Technische Universität Braunschweig, where he developed process routes for producing open-porous metal membranes made from nickel-based superalloys as a research assistant at the Institute for Materials Science. He is now looking forward to new challenges in the Foundry technology - Institute of Metallurgy -TU Clausthal. As part of a #BMWK (Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action) -funded #ZIM project (Central Innovation Program for SMEs), he will be working with the Institut für Maschinenwesen (IMW), TU Clausthal and Breuckmann Group to develop highly damping CuAlMn casting alloys for industrial applications.
