#News | 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘆 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗵𝗼𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗢𝗙 Yesterday, we had the honor of hosting the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania (Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to Germany), Giedrius Puodžiūnas, alongside Commercial Attaché Inga Rovbutas and Faustas Tolkusinas from Invest Lithuania. The visit offered a comprehensive introduction to Fraunhofer IOF’s vision for optics and photonics as well as our innovative contributions to key markets such as mobility, manufacturing, and space applications. During their time at the institute, the delegation toured one of our laser laboratories and received an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at our micro- and nano-optics lab –showcasing applied photonics research. A central focus of the visit was fostering collaboration. The discussions highlighted existing partnerships and explored exciting new opportunities for joint research projects. The Lithuanian representatives also showed keen interest in our efforts to support startups and entrepreneurship in photonics. This includes initiatives like the Digital Innovation Hub Photonics (DIHP), which nurtures spin-offs and startups in optics and photonics at the Beutenberg Campus in Jena.

Fraunhofer IOF will take part in the scientific exchange: meet Dr. Karin Burger at our booth, get to know about our research activities in Quantum Technologies, and take a look at the replica of our Optical Ground Station or our miniaturized sources for entangled photon pair generation towards space qualification. In addition, Fraunhofer IOF will represent the project HyperSpace at the EQTC together with project partners. While Dr. Karin Burger will give an overview of the project with a poster on “Towards a global Quantum communication network – the HyperSpace project”, Aiden Rosebush from the University of Toronto will present a poster entitled “An Exponential Reduction in Training Data Sizes for Machine Learning Derived Entanglement Witnesses”. In this project, machine learning is used to produce entanglement witnesses, which are an efficient sort of measurement scheme for detecting specific types of entanglement. Crosby (US-Botschaft) visited our institute on October 22. In presentations and discussions, they learned about current photonics research and explored opportunities for increased transatlantic cooperation. From the 3D measurement of complex objects and highly secure communication using quanta to optical systems that have made it into space from Jena – the US-diplomats took the opportunity to find out all about the work of Fraunhofer IOF during presentations and a lab tour. In personal talks with our researchers, they also discussed opportunities and prospects for increased transatlantic cooperation in the future. "You have built up an impressive network here.", complimented John R. Crosby the institute and its researchers and employees referencing the great interdisciplinary network of research institutes, startups and industry, he witnessed during his visit in Jena. The series "Faces of Fraunhofer IOF" introduces them: "Keeping at it is everything," says Julia Hengster. The physicist with a PhD is a keen athlete and recently completed her second long-distance triathlon. But also in her working life, Julia is involved in kind of a triathlon. She works at Fraunhofer IOF as a consultant for the institute's management, is the coordinator of the Max Planck School of Photonics and coordinates the site management of the Fraunhofer Research Center in Erfurt. Julia therefore knows too well that an iron stamina is not only needed in sports, but also in everyday working life between funding applications and strategy development. What drives her is the joy of discovery - including her own limits. Leading representatives from research, industry and start-ups came together at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI on October 17, 2024, for the ‘Forum for Quantum Communication in Germany’, organised by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung-funded QR.X, QuNET and SQuaD consortia. The aim was to highlight prospects for quantum communication in Germany and present concrete progress. The QuNET initiative demonstrated quantum-secure data transmission in Berlin's inner-city network, a possible approach for the secure transmission of personal data in digital government services. In order to promote exchange within the forum and to recognise the BMBF's pioneering funding strategy, an impulse paper https://lnkd.in/gk5TBwcQ on the topic of quantum communication was drawn up from within the research and industry ecosystem in the run-up to the forum and ceremoniously presented to the BMBF State Secretary Dr. Roland Philippi at the event. Fraunhofer IOF's contribution in this specific issue was the leading role in the Impulse paper by Dr. Torsten Siebert and the organisation of the event by Dr. Anja Milde in Kooperation with Fraunhofer HHI.
We were proud to host the “Forum for #QuantumCommunication in Germany“ at Fraunhofer HHI! The event brought together various stakeholders from research and industry as well as policy-makers like Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI), CEN and CENELEC and European Quantum Industry Consortium (QuIC). Prof. Martin Schell opened the event by welcoming special guest Dr. Roland Philippi (State Secretary at the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung). Afterwards, the QuNET project successfully demonstrated live the 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐦-𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐧'𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫-𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤. Shout-out to our #QuNET team lead by Dr. Nino Walenta and our partners Fraunhofer IOF, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V., Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light & FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg. The day continued with the official presentation of the 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐦-𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 to Dr. Philippi. The paper is a collaboration between the three BMBF-funded projects QuNET, QR.X und SQuaD. Furthermore, visitors enjoyed a video demonstration of quantum teleportation from Universität des Saarlandes as well as panel discussions, presentations and a variety of info points highlighting the important topics in quantum communication.
