Retire credits and claim your impact Claim your impact sounds good! Retiring, not so much. 🎤 But no worries, it's not what you have in mind 🙅🏾♀️. You can either own a carbon credit and hold it, or you can retire it. Retiring a credit means that you are claiming it for you and that it cannot be re-used or transferred anymore. This is then reflected in the register of the issuer of that specific carbon credit. This approach helps to keep track of all credits (e.g., Gold Standard or Carbon Standard International). P.S. Sign a purchase contract Sign a contract? Sounds so simple? It almost is. 💭 The project developers have a say in the matter as well 📢: Once you pick 2 or 3 carbon projects, you need to step into a purchase agreement with each of these project developers to negotiate terms and the payment & delivery structure. If you buy carbon credits on the spot this can be rather simple, but if you are negotiating future delivery of carbon credits it can be complex to negotiate these elements. Some organisations are working on standard terms, but as the market is rapidly growing and constantly changing, a standardisation remains difficult. We recommend finding experts who are familiar with the carbon market to get the most optimal set of terms for your next purchase. P.S. Negotiate prices How do we manage to break down the pricing in a simple way? 🧮 Prices of carbon credits are still far from aligned. 🔀 This will give you a little insight: We see big swings in all directions between similar-looking carbon credits. It is vital to therefore compare prices like-for-like, meaning to first benchmark great projects and then compare projects within the same category. One example is to only compare Direct Air Capture projects with each other as this is the only project type that removes carbon permanently AND allows for relatively easy carbon dioxide measurement. If you compared this with projects which lock up carbon for just a few years it would be comparing apples to oranges. The biggest lever to negotiate prices with project developers is to step into a multi-year agreement to buy carbon credits for the next few years. This certainty allows project developers to offer significant discounts. P.S. Interested in a great insight now?
