AV Roadshow 2024 - Showcasing the Research on Autonomous Driving    Last month we had the opportunity to invite guests from politics, press and industry to present and demonstrate our current research and the newest trends within the field of autonomous driving.   Together with TUM Autonomous Vehicle Systems Lab, Cyber-Physical Systems Group TUM and TUM - Lehrstuhl für Verkehrstechnik, we showcased different topics about 'Perception & Prediction', 'Planning & Control', 'Evaluation & Simulation', 'Safety', 'Intelligent Infrastructure' and 'Teleoperation'.   Special thanks to everyone who participated in making this event great and possible!

He congratulate Jean-Michael Georg who defended his PhD thesis yesterday! His work therefore deals with the question of how the HMI for teleoperated Automated Driving Systems (ADS) should be designed in order to achieve a sufficiently good perception of the environment, considering not only the safety but also meeting ergonomic requirements. Congratulations to Clemens Pizzinini who defended his PhD thesis yesterday! His thesis examined the costs and benefits of vehicle-based services, their applicability and scalability for the sub-Saharan use case, and how they compare to stationary services. 🌍 Incredible First Half at Columbia University! Time flies! I'm already halfway through my Visiting Scholar stay at Columbia University, and it's been a fantastic journey so far! 🚀 Researching Mobility in NYC Working with Markus Schläpfer and his Smart & Sustainable Cities Research Group has been a fantastic experience. We've been focusing on pattern-based demand estimation and micromobility for New York City, a city that continues to surprise me with its flexibility and innovation in transportation. NYC is a pioneer in finding solutions for more equitable access to mobility in the future. 🌟 General Takeaways so Far New York isn't just a fast-paced city; it's leading the way in how cleverly used urban spaces can tackle the complexities of sustainable and socially fair mobility. And Columbia University ? It's not just the prestigious Ivy League name — what stands out is the energy and commitment from students and researchers to make an impact. 🎤 IEEE ITSC 2024 Another major highlight of the first half of my research stay was presenting our publication "Enhancing Transportation Insights: A Scalable OpenStreetMap Harmonization and Synthesis Framework" at the 27th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC) 2024 in Canada, Edmonton. Co-chairing the "Data Management and Geographic Information Systems" session with the session chair, Anas Fattouh, made it even more memorable. Last week we had the opportunity to showcase our work at the TUM Open House! Visitors of all ages were able to drive with our EDGAR vehicle, teleoperate an RC car in a miniature world, and learn about the latest trends in autonomous driving. A big thank you to everyone who made this possible!

Wiesn Shuttle 2024 - If We Can Make It Here, We Can Make It Anywhere! 🎡🚙 One and a half years ago, we finally got our hands on EDGAR, the new research vehicle of the Technische Universität München. We started at the very beginning, and over the past months, our incredibly talented team of Research Associates spent countless hours assembling all the necessary ingredients for success: 📷 Synchronizing and calibrating our complex sensor setup 🌆 Establishing a real-time 3D simulation environment 💾 Setting up a data center to handle the massive amounts of data collected during our test runs 💻 Implementing a modular software stack based on Autoware Foundation With these foundations in place, we could finally shift our focus to the development of AV algorithms. We worked tirelessly on our track next to the Oktoberfest, overcoming various challenges, e.g. 🗺 In-house generation of HD maps 🚋 Perception of uncommon objects (rickshaws, trams, etc.) 🚶♂️ Motion-Prediction of large groups of pedestrians 🕹 Integration of our teleoperation software to handle corner cases that our AV software isn’t quite ready for (yet) Last week, everything finally came together (https://lnkd.in/dn_F9hUW). 1 Mio.$ Title defense during the Indy Autonomous Challenge on the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway! Unfortunately, we finished the race with third place in the time trial and a spectacular spin. Congrats to the Cavalier Autonomous Racing for the 1st place in the time trial and to Unimore Racing and PoliMOVE Autonomous Racing Team (1st place - passing) for a fantastic passing competition. What we have learned this time: Sometimes, you must exceed the limits to know your weaknesses. But be sure, we will learn from our crash and will emerge even stronger in the next race!
