With 2023 drawing to a close, we look back on an exciting year for the #German-#Canadian exchange on #innovation. During the past twelve months, the German Canadian Concourse has built new alliances with players in the #science and #technology community in #Canada and #Germany, and has (re)established partnerships with federal and provincial governmental organizations, research institutes and corporates to revive its Transatlantic Symposium. Following a scouting of the ecosystems in both countries, the #GCC presented on November 30th in #Montreal and #Berlin a conference on #ArtificialIntelligence in #Aerospace which attracted a remarkable attention among experts in the field of #AI, #aviation and #space as well as architects of #transatlantic technology cooperation. As artificial intelligence is in an acceleration phase worldwide and across technological disciplines, the GCC has proven again to be at the forefront of an emerging innovative development and to reflect the German-Canadian angle by paving the way for cooperation between Canada and Germany in an evolving field of AI – Aerospace. In this conext, we would like to thank all our partners who share our vision on leveraging Canada's and Germany's innovative potential by fostering transatlantic collaboration and have supported once more the #GCC2023. What is the potential of #ArtificialIntelligence to push #space boundaries? Various answers to this question were given by the speakers of a dedicated session during the recent #GCC Transatlantic Symposium bringing experts together in #Berlin and #Montreal. #AI is a strategic competency for technological leadership. AI is in an acceleration phase worldwide and across technological disciplines. During the GCC, we were particularly interested in understanding the expertise of AI and aerospace players in #Canada and #Germany and to identify opportunities for #transatlantic collaborations. Leonard Schlag from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) looked at the application of AI for future space operations. Related was a presentation by Mission Control's Dr. Michele Faragalli who focused on opportunities that AI provides for #EdgeComputing in connection with space missions. NorthStar Earth & Space's approach to space #SituationalAwareness and the sustainability of space by means of AI were presented by Frederic Pelletier. The feasibility and current limitations of artificial intelligence for #robotics and planetary exploration were discussed in a contribution by Dr. Thomas Vögele, Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI). The usage of AI for automatic object recognition was the focus of Dr. Oliver Lang's talk on space borne radar imagery. The Field Trip to the Airbus #Berlin Office was again a highlight during the German Canadian Concourse 2023. #Airbus is a global pioneer in the #aerospace sector anchored in #Germany's #AerospaceIndustry and with a growing footprint in #Canada and has therefore been a preferred partner of the #GCC on topics showcasing successful technology collaboration between both countries. Since 2013, Airbus has supported the mission of the GCC of connecting Canada and Germany on #innovation. Airbus has hosted Networking Receptions (2013) and organized Field Trips (2016, 2017, 2023) as part of the German Canadian Concourse's supporting program and brought in valuable contributions during the Transatlantic Symposia under an #aviation- and #space-related angle. The #GCC2023 Field Trip gave a unique insight into Airbus' activities in Germany. In its showroom in Berlin, Airbus Helicopters and Airbus Defence and Space presented developments in #aeronautics and #spaceflight relying on #AI solutions which are of relevance for #transatlantic applications: #MaritimeSecurity, #arctic security, #ArtificialIntelligence for elevation models, classification of ships, automatic take-off and landing, automatic object recognition, ... The #GCC on November 30th brought together thought-leaders, experts, and decision-makers to discuss how #German 🇩🇪 - #Canadian 🇨🇦 collaboration can accelerate the implementation of #ArtificialIntelligence (#AI) 📺 in #Aerospace ✈ 🛰. The Networking Receptions are an integral part of the German Canadian Concourse. Following the Transatlantic Symposium, the social gatherings provide the opportunity to deepen discussions and to explore opportunities for collaboration between German and Canadian players.
