Excited to contribute to the global conversation on #Disaster #Risk with our new open-access publication in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction! Our paper, "Towards integrated flood management: Vulnerability and flood risk in the Ayeyarwady Delta of #Myanmar" highlights how the impacts of flooding in vulnerable river deltas are systematically underestimated, often due to narrow focuses on single #Hazards or social vulnerability alone. By applying the Global Delta Risk Index, we address this gap for the #Ayeyarwady #Delta, using township-level data and over 55 indicators of social and ecological vulnerability to assess pluvial, fluvial, and coastal #FloodRisk under 100-, 500-, and 1,000-year probability scenarios. This approach aligns with the #SendaiFramework's priority of comprehensive disaster risk assessment. Our key findings indicate that 65% of the population and 60% of ecosystems in this delta are exposed to complex flood risks—insights that underscore both heightened #Vulnerability and significant potential for #Resilience. Our research advocates for integrated flood management as a crucial pathway to mitigate risks, protect livelihoods, and sustain vital ecosystem services. 🔗 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/eHzs6YSc Many thanks to my co-authors Katharina Seeger, @Dominik Brill, @Helmut Brückner, @Aung Kyaw, @Zin Nwe Myint, and @Frauke Kraas for their work and insights on this project!
