🌍 Reflections on the World Health Summit 2024 🌍 WHS 2024 was a significant step forward for global health, including for #AMR. With 7 sessions dedicated to antimicrobial resistance—compared to just 1 in 2023 — it’s clear that the global focus on tackling AMR is growing. 💊 The Global AMR R&D Hub had the privilege of co-hosting a session with Roche on October 15. Our excellent panelists offered valuable insights into the urgent need for new antimicrobials and the critical importance of improving access to existing treatments.🔬💡 Key takeaways from the session: 💡 Dr Cary Adams: "AMR itself is a complex thing to understand, but 'an infection that can't be treated' is something they definitely do understand.” 💡 Michael Lobritz, MD, PhD: “Drug development, we like to talk about it as being the world’s most complicated team sport, is an intensive multidisciplinary effort that requires enthusiastic contribution from a diverse range of experts”. 💡 Elmar Nimmesgern: “Through [partnerships] we can really advance the pipelines, we can advance individual products”. 💡 Malin Grape: "We need to be assessing the needs for the development of new treatments according to the needs of patients." 💡 Sabiha Essack: "Pooled procurement and subscription […] may be the first low-hanging fruit that we can think about to make sure that there’s accessibility to existing and new antimicrobials as they become available." Many thanks to Roche for co-organizing this impactful event, to Dr. Abdullah Algwizani, Chief Executive Officer of the Public Health Authority, for sharing valuable updates on Saudi Arabia's efforts to curb AMR, and to our moderator, Shiulie Ghosh, along with all the panelists, for their insightful contributions. 🎥 Watch the full session recording here: https://lnkd.in/dyBhWYDj 👉 For more details about the session, check out this article from #Tagesspiegel: https://lnkd.in/ej42RXSf Hermann Garden Lesley Ogilvie Ralf Sudbrak Suzanne Edwards Kristy Marr Paulina F. 🌍 [UNGA High-Level Week] Reflecting on a pivotal moment: UN High-Level Meeting on AMR! The UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) took place on September 26th, at #UNGA79 in New York, marking only the second time world leaders have united at this level to confront the global threat of drug-resistant infections. 🌐 AMR knows no borders, and no single country can solve this crisis alone. This meeting was a crucial opportunity for global leaders to take collective action against AMR, which endangers global health, food security, and the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 🏥🌾🌍 The meeting led to a political declaration where world leaders committed to: ・Urgent global action to address AMR, including a target to reduce the global deaths associated with AMR by 10% by 2030 and a target of USD 100 million to ensure at least 60% of countries have funded AMR plans by 2030 ・The mandate for an Independent Science Panel on AMR ・Boosting R&D for vaccines, diagnostics, and antibiotics, particularly in developing countries. ・Driving solutions through innovative financing and public-private partnerships. ・Integrating AMR research into national action plans. ・Acknowledging the private sector’s role in developing affordable medicines and ensuring equitable access. ・Promoting global solidarity and cooperation for sustainable progress. We’re proud to have our Hub Secretariat Director, Dr. Lesley Ogilvie, represent us at this important event. We commend the global commitment to AMR and remain optimistic about the future progress ahead. 📢 Let’s keep AMR high on the global agenda! 📄🌍 To read the full declaration, see: https://lnkd.in/e-PzchgP #FightAMR #GlobalHealth #UNGA2024 #AMRLeadership #HighLevelMeeting

[UNGA High-Level Week] 🔍 What We Need is Bold Innovation to Combat AMR! 🚀✨ “AMR is a wicked problem that needs transdisciplinary approaches to find solutions. Without innovation and access to the right diagnostics to navigate this multifaceted threat, we are flying blind, and both the individual patient and society as a whole are losing out.” — Prof. Dr. Till Bachmann, The University of Edinburgh 🎓🌟 As the UNGA High-Level Week continues, it’s time to spotlight innovation in the battle against antimicrobial resistance. 🌍💪 From rapid diagnostics to innovative prevention strategies, enhanced surveillance, and new therapies, innovation is the key to tackling this global health crisis. 🔑 According to Professor Bachmann, “Diagnostics innovation, increased access, and the effective use of this cornerstone of medicine and surveillance are urgently needed. Diagnostics save drugs, save money, and, most importantly, save lives.” 💊🛡️ Today, let’s celebrate the remarkable researchers, scientists, and companies leading these breakthroughs, while also recognizing the importance of sustaining our commitment to innovation! 🎉💡 #InnovationForAMR #RnD #UNGA2024

[UNGA High-Level Week] How can we turn political declarations at the highest levels into tangible actions? 🤝 This is one of several crucial questions discussed at yesterday's side event, 'Ensuring Sustainable Access to Effective Antibiotics – the Path from UNGA to Impact,' held at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Other topics included Infection Prevention, Innovation, and Access. 💡🔬 The event featured a stellar lineup of speakers, such as the Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados and Chair of the Global Leaders Group on AMR; H.E. Ambassador Vanessa Frazier of Malta; H.E. Ambassador Francois Jackman of Barbados, co-facilitators of the Political Declaration on AMR, Dr. Hanan Balkhy, Dr. Jean Kaseya and leading AMR experts. The sessions were expertly moderated by Ramanan Laxminarayan, alongside Apoorva Mandavilli and Deepali Patel🧑⚕️ PM Mia Mottley opened the event with a fireside chat, stating, "We have a moral responsibility to develop new accessible antibiotics to save lives [...] The world needs to pause and get things right.” 🌏 Such strong commitment from global leaders is absolutely vital to combating AMR—but is it enough…? “I’m definitely an optimist, but when we think about this journey from commitment to implementation, I think there has to be a healthy dose of realism,” said Dr. Lesley Ogilvie. She stressed the need for strong governance, sustainable financing, political will, and practical technical expertise on the ground to make meaningful progress. ✨📈 The side event has provided a platform for exchanging ideas, fostering a sense of 'realistic optimism,' and helping shape the discussions leading into Thursday’s highly anticipated High-Level Meeting on AMR (Sep 26). 🗓️ We extend our heartfelt thanks to our co-hosts for this important event: One Health Trust, Africa CDC, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IFPMA, FIND, AMR Action Fund, The International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS), IDSA, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation 💼🤝🌟 🎥👉 For a full recording of the event, watch here: https://lnkd.in/dwX8YD8S As the High-Level Week begins today in New York, we look forward to continued collaboration and impactful discussions. 🙌
