Today, we are sharing a story from Frank Adamsky, Co-Founder & Business Trainer. Frank shares a unique narrative about a client who faced a distinct challenge with a supplier that exclusively produces custom equipment parts for a well-known agricultural machinery company. With the announcement of new equipment launching soon, it became clear that a new custom switch was needed. Specifically, it was a ‘steering column sensor switch’ – a crucial component that ensures operator safety. The supplier had the choice to formally ‘make’ our client go through the redesign process as they were the only one capable of producing this type of switch. However, neither budget nor time justified going through the standard process of designing and building a new part. Understanding the significance of this opportunity, our client extensively prepared for the upcoming discussions. Guided by our negotiation techniques, he built a strategy that allowed the supplier to ‘paint their own picture first’. "By taking this approach, he established respect and empowered them to take ownership of the solution", shares Frank. What’s also important to note is that the relationship between the supplier and the well-known agricultural machinery company carried significant weight as both companies were mutually dependant and the success (or failure) of one company would have a substantial impact on the other. Through the spirit of cooperation, mutual trust and free choice, the supplier chose the more informal path, recognizing the practicality and mutual benefit of the proposed assembly change. With this change, they would now produce two versions, using the existing switch as a starting point instead of completing a full redesign. By guiding them to see that new parts and materials were not needed and that higher costs and complications could be avoided, he secured the necessary switch and strengthened the relationship between the supplier and the company. The other engineers could not believe what had happened! They ran over to their leader (our client), almost jumping up and down in happiness - they couldn’t believe this was the outcome. Frank’s story underscores the importance of preparation, adaptability, and the ability to guide others to optimal solutions. As Frank often says, “Adversity is the diamond dust which polishes the finest gemstones". How have you recently thought of adversity as the stepping stone to opportunity?
