Better protection against sepsis pathogens 🦠 This promises the German company Heraeus Precious Metals with a new antimicrobial technology called AGXX. The precious metal-based additive won the Techtextil Innovation Award for improving the antimicrobial properties of clothing and bed linen in hospitals and care facilities. How it works? Incorporated into textiles, AGXX triggers a catalytic reaction through the interaction of two precious metals, silver and ruthenium. The reaction generates reactive oxygen, which effectively kills microorganisms. Last week I had the pleasure to speak at the Mid-West Sustainability Network Conference about our #sustainability journey at Heraeus Precious Metals, both globally and at our site in Shannon, Ireland HERAEUS METAL PROCESSING LIMITED. 🌱🌍 Engaging with other companies in the Shannon region is very important for Heraeus and our neighbors. We all want to learn and grow together so that we can achieve our Sustainability goals. 💡It was inspiring to see the sustainability strategies and achievements of our local peers. However, precious metals used in glass furnaces fall under Scope 3. ➡️ By developing innovative DPH materials, Heraeus Precious Metals contributes significantly to decreasing the carbon footprint of glass tools by making them more durable, resulting in less precious metal needed. ➡️ DPH Strong and DPH Flex are advanced precious metal alloys specifically tailored to meet the demanding requirements of glass tools, enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of production processes in the glass industry. 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝟮𝗢 𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 In the current issue of Nitrogen+Syngas Magazine my colleague Dr. Uwe Jantsch and I had the possibility to report on process performance results achieved for N2O reduction in nitric acid production using FTC gauze systems and iron oxide based secondary catalysts.   Key Takeaways:   👉 N2O Emissions are a byproduct of ammonia oxidation. Heraeus Precious Metals’ can design the gauze catalyst to reduce the N2O Emissions without doing harm to the ammonia oxidation efficiency.   👉 Heraeus Precious Metals’ FTC technology offers customizable primary N2O abatement suitable for various load conditions. Results show that FTC flex gauze systems can reduce N2O emissions up to 70% compared to state-of-the-art systems.   👉 In partnership with Łukasiewicz Research Network, secondary catalysts are developed to further reduce N2O emissions up to 95%. Wuhu! 🥳 Very proud that Heraeus Precious Metals is among the finalists of the Energy Efficiency Award by Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena). Congrats to my colleagues Dr. Irina Hondralis and Murat Hotunlu for their project on optimizing #energy-intensive processes. Our in-house experts developed a „burn time optimization algorithm“ that reduces the run time of our furnaces, in which #preciousmetals containing waste is processed for recycling. By determining the completion of the process live in the furnace, we can reduce the average burn time per batch from nine to seven hours. That’s a saving of more than 200 tons of #CO2e annually. The project is nominated in the category "Von clever bis digital! - Die Bandbreite der Energieeffizienz" (From clever to digital! - The range of energy efficiency). The winners will be announced in Berlin on 11 November. My fingers are crossed!
