On our way to a climate-neutral future, we at HHLA aim to halve our carbon emissions by 2030 in comparison to 2018. 🌱💚 We have been using green electricity at all Hamburg sites since early 2024 and we are investing in photovoltaic systems, battery storage solutions, and power grid expansion. Starting with our Container Terminal Altenwerder in Hamburg in 2010, we have steadily increased our green energy usage. By 2022, we had already reduced our carbon emissions by 30%. We also generate our own green energy. A new workshop at our Container Terminal Burchardkai in Hamburg will feature a photovoltaic system, and our subsidiary HHLA TK Estonia has installed a solar park at the Port of Muuga, powering the terminal with green electricity. 🌞 More innovative solutions are on the horizon. At our Container Terminal Altenwerder, for example, the batteries from automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are used to store electricity, providing flexibility against fluctuating energy prices. 💡🔋 #HHLA #sustainability #logistics

On track to greener logistics, we recently took a look behind the scenes of our Container Terminal Altenwerder in Hamburg with a team of enthusiastic content creators and colleagues 🌱📷 While chasing the most unique photo spots during our #InstaWalk, we explored the whole terminal. Along the way, we shared exciting insights into our automated and climate-friendly container handling. The undisputed highlight, however, was of course the stunning view that we got to enjoy on the container bridge 😍 🌒 #HHLA #logistics #InstaWalk #view

“Lending a sympathetic ear is the most important tool in my work.” #Meet Tatjana 👋🏻 Tatjana works with us as a social and addiction counsellor. Our colleagues can turn to her whenever they need quick and confidential support in times of crisis. Sometimes, all her clients need is someone to truly listen to them and show them that their problems are taken seriously. In most cases however, listening is just the start of a longer journey, where Tatjana helps her clients to see their challenging situation in a different light and to collaboratively find a way out. Confidentiality is crucial in Tatjana's work. To maintain anonymity, the drop-in sessions are scheduled in a way that clients don't bump into each other. Sessions are offered at our headquarters and at our container terminals in Hamburg. She has a legal duty of confidentiality that only ceases to apply in certain cases of addiction if the addiction is evident at work or impacts the employee’s ability to work. Though addiction counselling makes up a large part of what she does, the problem most colleagues struggle with, is increasing psychological stress. She is also increasingly asked by teams to help them improve their internal cooperation and chemistry. Tatjana greatly appreciates the diversity that her role brings. She never knows what she’s going to be faced with next. When having a difficult week, she is motivated by bumping into former clients who are now feeling much better. #HHLA #csr #mentalhealth #team

Meet Tamás 👋🏻 Tamás works in the Maintenance and Repair Inspection at our rail subsidiary METRANS Group in Dunajská Streda, Slovakia. He monitors and controls the work of the technicians that are responsible for the technical conditions of the containers at the gate and in the container repair shop. Tamás joined us in 2015 and initially worked as a technician in the Check In department. Since 2022 he is certified as a professional inspector. Now, it is his responsibility to minimise mistakes when communicating with shippers about the technical conditions and repairs of containers. In addition, Tamás assists in external audits, helps the technicians to simplify their work and manages the communication with the M&R departments at our foreign terminals. Tamás likes to share his technical knowledge and is eager to receive more certifications. The biggest challenge in his job? Meeting the expectations of the shipowners. All inspections and reporting must adhere not only to IICL regulations and standards, but also to separate shipowner’s standards as companies occasionally have standards that differ from IICL. It’s essential for Tamás to be familiar with these standards and know how to differentiate them. When confronting someone with a mistake, Tamás always tries to find common ground so that both parties are satisfied with the outcome, and nobody feels guilty about mistakes that have been made. #HHLA #METRANS #train #rail #team #technician

Converting food waste to clean energy⚡️ Our efforts to conserve resources are also demonstrated by our waste management system. We at HHLA reduce refuse and separate rubbish for recycling wherever possible so that reusable waste can be fed back into the resource cycle. Fruit waste accounts for the largest percentage of waste at our terminals. It includes fruit – such as bananas or pineapple – that is no longer suitable for consumption or processing 🍍 These imports are already unfit for sale when they arrive in Hamburg and have to be disposed of. Most of this waste is used by an external biogas plant in order to generate electricity. Last year, 491,269 kWh of electricity were produced without CO2 in this way. #HHLA #sustainability #recycling

To create climate-friendly logistics chains, we at HHLA aim to integrate other stakeholders. Our joint-venture HVCC Hamburg Vessel Coordination Center GmbH is a great example. HVCC offers terminals and shipping companies operational coordination services to optimise the emissions of arriving and departing ships. It coordinates 4,400 vessels with 7,300 terminal calls each year, including ultra-large vessels, feeders and inland waterway ships. To deal with the extensive amount of data, HVCC uses a tailor-made software that continuously updates ship movements in Northern Europe and coordinates them dynamically with traffic conditions on the river Elbe and within the port. Relevant status information about the ships is shared with the previous and following ports. In addition to its original coordination and stowage planning services, HVCC is continuously working on extensive networking to make port calls even more efficient and sustainable through digital processes. #HHLA #port #portofhamburg #sustainability
