👏 Applause for our successful PhD students Hanna Kallweit and Marco Martini! Both recently won the Best Poster Award at the conference "Electrochemistry 2024" in Braunschweig. Congrats to both of you! 💡 Hanna presented in her poster "Electrochemical Valorization of Cyrene Towards Fine Chemical Building Blocks" the electrochemical Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of the biomass-derived platform chemical cyrene. 🧐 In his poster contribution entitled "Towards an Elevated Temperature and Pressure 3-Electrode Hydrodynamic Channel Flow Cell" Marco highlighted the technical concepts and achievements related to the construction of a new test rig. Nanochemistry: Discovery of molecular intermediates and non-classical mechanisms in nanoparticle formation 🔎 Metallic nanoparticles are often used as heterogeneous catalysts, electrocatalysts, and optical materials. Their functional properties result from their surface and atomic structure, composition, and shape. While the colloidal synthesis method is relatively simple, the underlying nanochemistry still puzzles and fascinates researchers. 🔬 Researchers at HI ERN, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, the University of Maryland, and the University of Washington are using liquid phase transmission electron microscopy (LPTEM) and reaction kinetic modeling to determine the nucleation and growth mechanisms and identify molecular intermediates during the formation of silver nanoparticles. 💡 Their findings show that classical nucleation theories only represent the complex reality of nanochemistry to a limited extent. Instead, they propose a reaction-limited nucleation mechanism. ♻ Scalable and stable: researchers demonstrate largest CO2 reduction to date using CO2 electrolysis Until now, fossil fuels have been used to produce fuels and essential chemicals such as plastics, fertilizers and pharmaceuticals, which release CO2 when burned. A promising way to produce CO2-neutral fuels and chemicals from carbon dioxide and renewable energy is the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction. 💡 Researchers at the University of Toronto and HI ERN have succeeded in improving the gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for CO2 electrolysis through microstructure optimization. This is a pioneering step towards producing CO2-neutral fuels and chemicals using CO2 electrolysis. Congrats to Prof. Marc L.! 👏 He was recently awarded the Joachim Walther Schultze Prize 2024 for his pioneering work in the development of stable nanoparticles for electrochemical reactions. The German Association of Electrochemical Research Institutes (AGEF e.V.) awards the prize, endowed with 2.000 Euro, every two years to early career independent researchers for their important contribution to electrochemistry-related research topics.
