Human rights work aims to make human beings treat each other better. To do that, we need to better understand human beings! 🧠 When I started learning about neuroscience and psychology, I could not believe that I had spent years trying to change how people think and behave towards each other, but with so little input from, for example, research into how empathy and compassion work. Fortunately, there is a wonderful organization called The Mindbridge Center who are dedicated to bridging the gap between brain science and human rights activism. 🤓 They just launched MindMatters, a 6-week interactive seminar series by the Mindbridge Institute that bridges the gap between neuroscience, psychology, and human rights. Mindbridge founder Laura Ligouri has been an essential partner and advisor to hope-based communications, most recently in our #RewireYourMind incubator that we run with Unhack Democracy to help activists build resilience and creativity. In the run-up to the #EUelections, the Right has successfully utilised fear and division to gain electoral support. But should this be the strategy for progressives? The "Green Wave of Hope" that characterised the last EU elections has died down, overtaken by extreme right-wing parties who spread fear to attract support. Nurturing such feeling in times of turmoil is not only easy, but also makes voters even more receptive to a divisive, scapegoating worldview at the expense of progressives. And while jumping to the conclusion that such is the way to success, fear undermines our empathy, making us prioritise our self-interest over compassionate, long-termist thinking conducive to good climate change policy. Instead, progressives must embrace their core values and hope as the key to electoral success. "If people believe there is a way they can 'get this done', they are far more likely to roll up their sleeves and get behind bold policies welcoming newcomers or transforming their cities," writes Thomas Coombes. https://lnkd.in/dc3izazG
