Welcome back to #WavelengthWednesday! Today's post is dedicated to viruses 🦠 and a new study from Boston University discussing a new technique for identifying them via microscope 🔬 with the help of one of our #Coboltlasers! The new technique is called called WIDE-MIP (Widefield Interferometric Defocus-Enhanced Mid-Infrared Photothermal Microscopy). This technique helps to identify and analyze single viruses by looking at their unique chemical fingerprints. 💡 Why is this important? Traditional methods for detecting viruses often require amplifying the virus’s genetic material or using labels to identify viral proteins. These methods can be time-consuming and may not provide detailed information about the virus’s composition. The new WIDE-MIP technique offers a faster and more detailed way to study viruses without needing these extra steps. 🔎 What did they find? ☑️ The technique can distinguish between different types of viruses, such as DNA and RNA viruses, by identifying specific chemical signatures. ☑️It provides detailed information about the proteins and nucleic acids (genetic material) in the viruses. We are excited to be back with our weekly series where we explore some of the application areas of #lasertechnology. 📑 This week we look at skin and its mechanical behaviour and elasticity. Understanding how these traits stem from collagen and elastin fibers can deepen our understanding and improve skin treatments in the future. 🔬This research is the result of the latest collaborative efforts involving scientists from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), Amsterdam UMC and the Red Cross Hospital in the Netherlands who used advanced #microscopy techniques to scrutinize collagen and elastin fibers in 24 human dermis skin samples, capturing them in 3D. 💡 This analysis was accomplished with the help of our #VALO Tidal #femtosecond #fiberlaser. ✨The study provides valuable understanding of how skin responds to mechanical forces, shedding light on its elasticity, strength, and other vital characteristics. #WavelengthWednesday is back! Our weekly series where we delve into the heart of laser technology and share insights on some of its applications. Today's post is dedicated to the zebrafish 🐠 📑 A recent study from Xiamen University (China) has uncovered the detrimental effects of #quantum dots (QDs) on the retinal health of zebrafish. Quantum dots, known for their unique optical properties and widespread use in various technologies, have now been shown to cause significant retinal degeneration. We are proud of our contribution to this piece of research and the role of our laser in the experiment: The sicentists used the 473 nm Cobolt laser as the excitation source for the Raman spectra as part of their imagine techniques! 💡 QDs have shown a great potential in many fields, however, as the study demonstrates, there needs to be further investigation into the safety of these nanoparticles and their application in industry and biomedicine.
