Today we present IAR System Group's interim report for the third quarter. In a challenging macroeconomic environment, we achieved a solid 10% growth, with EBIT reaching 24%. We are particularly glad to see the continued strong demand in the areas of Safety, Security, and Compliance, where our Security product line recorded a new all-time high for third-quarter revenue. As we approach the launch of our subscription-based offering, our customers will soon be able to access IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm as a service through the cloud, enabling easier collaboration and automation, improving code quality, and accelerating time to market. This report also marks the first for our new CEO, Cecilia Wachtmeister: "An important takeaway from my first two months as CEO is the deep, unique expertise within the company, which has been essential for our success. It is clear that IAR is highly respected for the value we bring to the market, and I am determined to build on our strong reputation. I have also initiated a comprehensive review of our long-term strategy to ensure we remain well-positioned for future growth and continued innovation." Fastest PX5 RTOS even faster with IAR! According to Jacob Beningo's RTOS 2024 Performance Report, PX5 RTOS (the fastest RTOS in the report) is even faster when built with the IAR Systems’ compiler. Already up to 7.2 times faster than the worst-performing RTOS in the report, PX5 RTOS enjoys an additional 30% performance boost when using IAR. It’s a common belief among embedded developers (myself included at times) that modern compilers, like GCC, generate code that's “good enough”. But after diving into the numbers, I’ve realized that this assumption doesn't always hold true—especially when performance is critical. 🔍 What the data shows: I conducted a detailed benchmark study comparing GCC to IAR Embedded Workbench across several RTOS environments, including PX5 RTOS, FreeRTOS, and ThreadX. The results? IAR consistently outperformed GCC by a margin of 20-40% in most cases! When efficiency and speed are crucial, that’s a game-changer. 📊 Check the comparison: The table below illustrates how PX5 RTOS performed under both compilers. While some tests, like Cooperative Scheduling, show little difference due to their reliance on assembly code (which compilers optimize similarly), others, such as Memory Allocation and Message Processing, reveal significant performance gaps. 🤔 Why does this matter? Commercial compilers like IAR Embedded Workbench offer optimizations that GCC sometimes lacks. When you’re working on projects where every millisecond or kilobyte counts—think low-power devices, real-time applications, or critical firmware—a commercial compiler could be the difference between a passable product and an outstanding one. 💡 The Takeaway: Don't assume that GCC or your open-source compiler is smart enough to optimize your code the best! If you’re developing systems where performance and efficiency are paramount, it’s worth evaluating the impact a commercial compiler could have on your application. The benchmarks tell a clear story: sometimes, investing in a commercial solution is the only way to truly optimize performance.
