For Healthcare Professionals We are excited to share that earlier this month, our French team organized the first Inspire implant training session in Lyon, France, as part of an ongoing educational program. The session took place in an anatomical lab, providing ENT surgeons with hands-on experience in the Inspire procedure. A big thank you to all participants for their dedication during this full-day training.

If patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (#OSA) have been treated for other medical reasons, for example in the upper body area, in the past or if they have had a central port inserted during a previous surgical procedure, a different placement of the stimulation electrode may be considered when implanting the #Inspire system. The cuff for the hypoglossal nerve can be connected to the pulse generator on the left or right side.   A team from the University of Kansas Medical Center in the US has conducted a preliminary study to investigate whether treatment results are affected by left-sided placement (“L-down”) and right-sided placement (“R-up”) of the electrode.* They included a total of 190 patients with an average age of 61 in their study. The decrease in the apnoea-hypopnoea index (#AHI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (#ESS) values and treatment success were compared both pre- and post-implantation.   The authors did not observe any significantly different treatment outcomes between the L-down and R-up groups. They only recorded small differences between the two groups in terms of device adherence, but note that further studies are needed to investigate a potential connection between the placement of the electrode cuff and the treatment results in more detail.   * Arambula AM, Bon-Nieves A, Alapati R et al. "I could sleep for twelve hours and still be tired." This is how Michael P. describes his everyday life in his early 40s. He was constantly tired, listless and exhausted. As a family man and professional fire-fighter, he would have been only too pleased to give it everything he’s got. Despite several visits to the doctor, it was not clear for a long time what was causing his issues. He only found out about obstructive sleep apnoea (#OSA) from a colleague. An ENT specialist confirmed the diagnosis and initially prescribed Michael P. a CPAP mask. However, the amateur boxer had problems with it. Finally, it was determined that Michael P. was not receiving appropriate therapy due to this CPAP intolerance and that he would no longer have been able to work as a fire-fighter. He looked for other treatment options and came across the Inspire therapy. The operation took place in May 2019. Norbert M. has been using #Inspire since 2019. Before then, neither a CPAP nasal mask nor a CPAP full-face mask with humidifier could satisfactorily alleviate his obstructive sleep apnoea (#OSA). After Norbert M.'s CPAP intolerance was medically confirmed, he looked for an alternative form of therapy with his doctor. #Inspire user Andreas S. likes to be on the move — he enjoys traveling, hiking and swimming. The Inspire therapy makes this much easier for him once more. After being diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnoea (#OSA), he was prescribed a #CPAP mask, but this did not lead to an improvement of his symptoms. After medical consultation, an alternative was found together — Inspire therapy. After his operation, he now has a small remote control with him as a daily traveling companion.
