𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲-𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 GreenCape Authors: Ulrich Terblanche , @Christoff Botha, Christina Louw , and Jack-Vincent Radmore . This market intelligence report (MIR) is written for foreign and local investors looking to invest directly in the South African renewable energy market. It highlights opportunities in the public and private large-scale renewable energy market in South Africa. South Africa’s large-scale renewable energy sector is historically driven by the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), a government programme managed through the Independent Power Producers Office (IPPO). In 2023, private offtaker agreements have grown at a rapid pace and are expected to be a large driver of future renewable energy projects. Key developments influencing the market: • Eskom’s2 unbundling into distribution, transmission, and generation entities is close to realisation through the approval of necessary permits by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA). • Further amendments to the Electricity Regulations Act of 2006 (ERA) have removed the need for an electricity generation licence for large electricity generation projects. • The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) launched Bid Window (BW) 7 of the REIPPPP in December 2023, calling for 5 000 Megawatts (MW) of new renewable energy builds. • A draft update to the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), South Africa’s formal electricity plan, was published for public comment and includes more capacity allocation for distributed generation and allocation for solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind projects to accommodate BW7. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 edited by Debbie Hopkins and Kirsten Jenkins ⏬⏬⏬ Meeting the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement and limiting global temperature increases to less than 2°C above pre-industrial levels demands rapid reductions in global carbon dioxide emissions. Reducing #energy demand has a central role in achieving this goal, but existing policy initiatives have been largely incremental in terms of the technological and behavioural changes they encourage. Against this background, this book develops a #sociotechnical approach to the challenge of reducing energy demand and illustrates this with a number of empirical case studies from the United Kingdom. In doing so, it explores the #emergence, #diffusion and impact of low-energy innovations, including electric vehicles and smart meters. The book has the dual aim of improving the #academic understanding of sociotechnical transitions and energy demand and providing practical recommendations for public policy. It follows that there are three ways to reduce energy demand: 1️⃣ Improve conversion efficiencies and reduce transmission losses at all stages of the energy chain, including from primary to final energy (e.g. more efficient power stations) and from final to useful energy (e.g. more efficient boilers, engines and refrigerators). 2️⃣ Improve the ability of passive systems to trap energy for periods of time (e.g. more aerodynamic vehicles, better insulated buildings). 3️⃣ Reduce demand for energy services, such as heating, lighting and cooling, (e.g. lower internal temperatures, fewer overseas flights). These changes can be achieved through a combination of retrofitting existing technologies, investing in new technologies (e.g. installing a condensing boiler) and changing energy-related behaviour (e.g. turning off lights when not in use). Here's a recent publication from the Energy Institute on the World Energy Statistics Report 2024 (73rd edition) in collaboration with KPMG and Kearney The Energy Institute (EI) is the professional membership body for the world of energy. The EI Statistical Review of World Energy™ analyses data on world energy markets from the prior year. It has been providing timely, comprehensive and objective data to the energy community since 1952. ⏬⏬⏬ #Energy has always been and remains central to human achievement and progress. It is also, increasingly, central to our very survival. With global temperature increases averaging close to 1.5°C, 2023 was the warmest year since records began, and the increasingly severe impacts of #climate change were felt across all continents. We also experienced the continuing effects of geopolitical disruption on energy markets, and the economies and livelihoods they support. ▶️▶️ As the chartered professional membership body for people working across the world of energy, the Energy Institute is proud to be the home of the Statistical Review of World Energy. Our aim is to provide an objective, independent and comprehensive evidence base for decision makers in governments, businesses and civil society grappling with these profound challenges. ▶️▶️ In this second Statistical Review under the Institute’s custodianship, we report on another year of highs in our energy hungry world. Record consumption of fossil fuels and record emissions from energy, but also record generation from renewables, driven by increasingly competitive wind and solar energy. The progress of the transition is slow, but the big picture masks diverse energy stories playing out across different geographies Hydrogen Intelligence - H2lligence #EnergyTransition #ClimateChange

𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 : Exploring Prospects and Addressing Hurdles Critical minerals play a significant role in energy transition technology roadmaps, especially within the electricity sector, as key enablers for renewables, among other low-carbon transition technologies, energy storage systems, and a comprehensive range of electrification technologies. For policymakers trying to address the challenges of increasing supply and access to such minerals to ensure continued progress toward NZE ambitions, there are a few key points that must be addressed in tackling the hurdles in pursuit of energy transition ambitions. 1️⃣▶️ Ensuring the clarity of policymaking toward a country-specific definition of critical minerals is essential for effective governance. 2️⃣▶️ Supportive policies and effective regulation can help guide strategic mineral resource planning, especially for battery materials. 3️⃣▶️ The fast-evolving market dynamics of critical minerals require price and risk management mechanisms. 4️⃣▶️ Geopolitical vulnerabilities are being exposed as a result of certain supply chain concentrations. 5️⃣▶️ Energy transition requires the development of technological innovation, material recycling, and substitution to help reduce the pressure placed on various actors to obtain critical minerals. 💥Summary: The level of investment in mining is increasing, but projects face hurdles such as extended cycles and ESG considerations. While the circular economy is promising, securing primary supply remains crucial. Decision makers must navigate these complexities to shape sustainable policies for the future. ⏬⏬⏬ Follow Integrated Africa Power (IAP) for more updates. #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy #CriticalMinerals #EnergyTransition KAPSARC

Future Energy Scenarios is in its thirteenth cycle, and has gone through a number of analytical and framework shifts during this period to support industry ambitions. This year our framework has changed in response to the need for strategic energy planning driven by #Ofgem, feedback from our stakeholders, and to also mirror ESO’s strategic transition to the Independent National Energy System Operator (NESO) in 2024. While direct comparison should not be made between last year’s scenarios and this year’s pathways due to the change in framework, this document sets out some of the key differences across emissions, energy demand and energy supply. ⏬⏬⏬⏬⏬ Follow Integrated Africa Power (IAP) for more updates #FutureEnergy #EnergyDemand #Emissions #FutureEnergyScenarios
