Science & Policy for People & Nature: Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services | #Biodiversity
Info
The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an independent intergovernmental body, established by member States in 2012. It provides policymakers with objective scientific assessments about the state of knowledge regarding the planet’s biodiversity, ecosystems and the benefits they provide to people, as well as the tools and methods to protect and sustainably use these vital natural assets. Our mission is to strengthen knowledge foundations for better policy through science, for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development. The work of IPBES can be broadly grouped into four complementary areas: • Assessments: On specific themes (e.g. “Pollinators, Pollination and Food Production”); methodological issues (e.g. Scenarios and Modelling); and at both the regional and global levels (“Global Assessment on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services”). • Policy Support: Identifying policy-relevant tools and methodologies, facilitating their use, and catalyzing their further development. • Building Capacity & Knowledge: Identifying and meeting the priority capacity, knowledge and data needs of our member States, experts and stakeholders. • Communications & Outreach: Ensuring the widest reach and impact of our work.

⚠️ We are witnessing an alarming decline in global biodiversity. ⚠️ But how does biodiversity loss actually affect our society? 👇 💧 Food and water 💧 - Biodiversity loss can disrupt or lead to the widespread failure of food systems - Our availability of clean water is in danger - The collapse of freshwater or food systems can lead to conflicts or geopolitical tensions 🍃 Climate change, extreme weather events and natural disasters 🍃 - Deforestation results in the loss of critical carbon storage capacity which can turn major carbon sinks into carbon emitters - Many ecosystems' protective functions against environmental hazards are diminished 💊 Health 💊 - The risk of diseases including zoonotic diseases and pandemic outbreaks is increased - Air and water quality is worsened - Possibilities to decrease stress and increase mental health are shrinkened - Potential sources for new treatments and cures are lost 💰 Economy 💰 - Costs in sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, forestry and tourism are increased - Livelihoods, cultural identities and traditional knowledges are lost - Poverty and social unrest are increased ⚠️ It goes without saying, action needs to be taken now. ⚠️ Read more about the impacts of biodiversity loss, how the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity is linked to all of this and what is needed to stop this path! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/durE3GsA Written by Simon Vaňo, Romana Jungwirth Březovská & Alejandra Viesca-Ramirez from the CzechGlobe. #BiodiversityNexus #COP16 #PeaceWithNature #COP16Colombia #Biodiversity #BiodiversityLoss #Food #Water #Climate #ClimateChange #Health #Economy UN Biodiversity IPBES

Thank you everyone who joined the IPBES Capacity Building Forum this week! Together we learnt that to make our work on biodiversity and ecosystem services - nature's contributions to people - impactful, we need: 🦜Communication, sharing the Assessment messages in an accessible format, 🌿Commitment to the course of nature and resilient ecosystems, 🍏Connecting with the language and realities of different stakeholders and audiences, 🌳 Continuity and a long-term orientation, and 🪲Community, with whom we can share and iterate ideas, concerns and solutions, across the world. Thank you speakers and organizers! Thank also for all the lovely birthday wishes! 💚 Ingunn Storro Josef Settele Helen Roy Vigdis Vandvik
📢 Happening now! The 7th meeting of the IPBES Capacity-Building Forum in Trondheim, Norway, 14-15 October. Looking forward to engagement and collaboration in support of the #GlobalAssessment2!
