The BBC used its keynote speech at last month's Edinburgh TV Festival to highlight the financial challenges faced by public service broadcasters when investing in new streaming technology; and especially when competing with the huge investments made by big technology companies in their own streaming platforms. Speaking at the event, BBC News Analysis Editor Ros Atkins highlighted that ‘UK streamers can point to rising user numbers, rising viewing hours, and new and improved products. Social commerce offers a 'frictionless shopping' blueprint for streaming services... Amazon has announced an expansion of its social media partnerships to include TikTok and Pinterest. Aiming to offer users of each platform a ‘frictionless shopping experience’, TikTok announced the partnership via a blog post which highlighted its goal to let users ‘discover, browse and buy - wherever and however they choose to shop’. The news follows the announcement of similar Amazon partnerships with Meta and Snap Inc. in November 2023. According to the PYMNTS Intelligence and Amazon Web Services (AWS) study, ’Tracking the Digital Payments Takeover: Monetising Social Media’, 28% of consumers have transacted on social media because they can buy as soon as a product captures their attention. The role of advertising in streaming continues to evolve... More news underpinning the importance of advertising in the streaming ecosystem arrived last week, via two key announcements from The Walt Disney Company and Sky. Disney revealed its streaming operations have achieved profitability, fuelled by increases in revenues and subscriber growth across its ad-supported tier, which now boasts 22.5 million subscribers. At the same time Sky announced the launch of additional live, free ad-supported streams for UK customers via Sky Sports+, which will become the home of the English Football League (EFL). Every EFL game was offered live this past weekend, with plans to ensure each team in the league is featured more than 20 times across the season. Dave Stratton, director of sports marketing for Sky and Now, highlighted plans to offer Sky’s ‘most personalised and engaging campaign ever delivered across multiple touch points on a team by team basis’.
