🎶 Workin’ overtime, need a wellness-check 🎶 What do you think, should governments make laws to prevent workers from answering email outside of normal work hours? Or should that call be up to companies, which benefit from retaining happy, healthy, well-supported employees? One of my favorite panels at the recent IMEX IMEX America 2024 conference was called “The Right to Disconnect” about whether to follow the Australian model of government mandates or leave it to the market to work out, especially in the topsy turvy late-nighter #events industry. The panel featured Nicola McGrane from Conference Partners International - PCO, Estefanía Zárate Angarita and Ori Lahav from Kenes Group, Ajay Bhojwani from MCI Middle East, and Nicole Walker from Arinex Pty Ltd, and all of them, spoiler alert, felt strongly that the Australian law is a grotesque government overreach and companies that demand too much of their employees after-hours will get sufficient comeuppance from the resulting competitive disadvantage. This was a fascinating debate, and a classic Event Rap ‘rap up’ which means I had 45 minutes to listen to the panel and write the rap (working all of the participants' names and key takeaways into the lyrics), with just a few minutes to perform the unrehearsed brand-new song at the grand finale. Ask yourself one question: when you have the option to end a panel discussion like this, why would you choose to end it any other way? Shout out to Jackson Whalan for the 🔥 beat, to Sylvie Neves (and Nia!) for capturing and sharing a clip of the rap in realtime, and to Martin Boyle from IAPCO for facilitating and making this performance happen.
