Ensuring Safe Tank Operations During High-Flow Pumping In industries using large storage tanks, safety during filling and emptying is critical, especially with high-flow pumping, such as during ship loading. Modern pumps can transfer vast amounts of liquid rapidly, necessitating advanced ventilation systems to manage the resulting air volumes. Without adequate ventilation, tanks risk over-pressurization or vacuum conditions, which can lead to structural failure. For tanks containing flammable liquids with a Flash Point below 60°C (ISO 28300 / API 2000), safety requirements are even more stringent. The German Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances (TRGS 509) mandate that storage tank vents need to be equipped with Flame Arresters that are both deflagration-proof and capable of withstanding continuous burning. These devices prevent flames from entering the tank, significantly reducing the risk of explosions. KITO provides advanced solutions with larger valves in combination with Flame Arresters (up to DN 200) that are deflagration-proof and endurance burning-proof for explosion groups IIA to IIB3. These valves effectively manage high airflow rates, ensuring safe tank operation. These valves can also be provided with electrical heating. Applications of Flame Arresters with Small Connection Sizes KITO® flame arresters are tested and certified according to international standards like ISO 16852 and can be found in: Measuring Instruments Control Panels Laboratories Equipment construction in explosive atmospheres KITO® Flame Arresters with Small Connection Sizes KITO® offers a range of flame arresters approved for all explosion groups, with sizes starting from DN 15 (1/2”) up to DN 50 (2”). Threaded connections are available in BSP or NPT types, and flanged options come with DIN or ANSI 16.5 flange connections. The KITO® RG Flame Arresters The bi-directional KITO® RG deflagration flame arrester is approved for explosion groups IIA1 to IIB3, available in sizes from DN 15 (1/2”) to DN 50 (2”) with either flanged or threaded connections. The detonation-approved KITO® RG flame arrester is certified for all explosion groups from IIA to IIC, offering bi-directional protection and the capability to install a temperature sensor for situations requiring endurance burning. The KITO® FS Flame Arresters The KITO® FS type flame arrester, featuring only threaded connections, is approved for both deflagration and detonation processes across all explosion groups. This bi-directional flame arrester is robust, easy to maintain, and cost-effective, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of applications. The KITO® RG and KITO®FS flame arresters enhance safety by being approved for the most demanding explosion groups and are available in various sizes to meet different requirements. The importance of the leakage rate of atmospheric storage tank breather valves Storage tanks are essential components in many industries, holding valuable liquids ranging from water to highly volatile chemicals.
