A leading contemporary art gallery with locations in Berlin, Munich, Seoul, and Mexico City.

Info

KÖNIG GALERIE has evolved into a dynamic platform for contemporary art in Berlin and beyond. Initially founded by Johann König as “Johann König, Berlin” in 2002, the gallery specializes in showcasing the work of both emerging and established international artists, with a particular emphasis on younger generations. Its program is characterized by interdisciplinary, concept-driven approaches, encompassing a wide array of artistic media, from sculpture and painting to video, installation, printmaking, photography, and performance. In 2015 the former church St. Agnes became the new flagship space, aptly named KÖNIG GALERIE. Located in Berlin-Kreuzberg, the monumental brutalist building was originally designed by architect Werner Düttmann between 1964 and 1967. After a respectful renovation by the acclaimed architect Arno Brandlhuber, the project was awarded the Berlin Architecture Prize in 2016. In April 2021, the gallery branch KÖNIG SEOUL opened in the South Korean capital. From 2017 to 2023, König set up pop-up spaces in London, Vienna, Tokyo, and Monaco, as well as a second location in Berlin at Telegraphenamt adjacent to Museumsinsel. KÖNIG MEXICO CITY opened its doors in early 2024, and KÖNIG MUNICH in the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk opens as the gallery’s third location in Germany in May 2024. The gallery has successfully placed works in important private and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Guggenheim Foundation. The artists exhibited by the gallery have been the subject of solo exhibitions in institutions worldwide, are regularly included in prestigious group exhibitions, such as Documenta and the biennials in Venice, Berlin, New York, and elsewhere, and have also been awarded many significant prizes, commissions, and public projects.

KÖNIG BERGSON is delighted to present WHERE EARTH MEETS SKY, a group exhibition of contemporary painting that reimagines the landscape as a dynamic space shaped by culture, memory, and perception. Featuring the works of 26 artists on the ground and first floor of the Neubau at Bergson Kunstkraftwerk, the exhibition challenges traditional views of the landscape, not as a static, natural entity, but as a constantly evolving concept. Each artist brings a unique, abstract approach to the theme of "landscape," pushing the boundaries of representation and distilling the natural world into new visual languages. The landscape is not simply depicted – it becomes a vehicle for exploring our environment's psychological, emotional, and political dimensions. Through layers of texture, color, and form, the artists shift our focus from the physical landscape to its symbolic meanings – revealing how our perception of nature is shaped by history, memory, and collective identity. • KÖNIG BERGSON is pleased to present IM SPIEGEL VERLOREN, a solo exhibition by German artist Armin Boehm, his second with the gallery. In this body of work, Boehm constructs a fractured reality where the boundaries between fiction and history dissolve. Rather than mere repetition, history mutates, taking on new forms that challenge perception. Once-static images become charged with shifting meanings, their significance shaped by those who wield them. We look forward to seeing you at the artist talk! Opening tonight at KÖNIG GALERIE, the exhibition THE ENCHANTMENT ROOM marks the debut of New York-based artist Dana James with the gallery. The exhibition explores themes of femininity, memory, and transformation through James’s distinctive interplay of color, texture, and material. Blending soft pastels with bold, gestural strokes, James’s paintings evoke both serenity and intensity. By working with recycled canvases, she infuses her compositions with a sense of history and impermanence, reflecting on the passage of time and the fluid nature of memory. As she describes, THE ENCHANTMENT ROOM captures the glinting of the ocean, the magic of nature’s vastness as a child, and the flashing of color just before sleep. With a practice rooted in contradiction, James explores the tension between beauty and chaos, clarity and abstraction. The textural richness of her surfaces, combined with iridescent pigments, transforms each work into a dreamlike space where reality and fantasy intertwine. Opening tomorrow at KÖNIG GALERIE, MON PÈRE marks Bosco Sodi’s third exhibition with the gallery and his first in one of its Berlin locations. The title, translating to “my father” in French, reflects Sodi’s ongoing exploration of materiality and spirituality. In this deeply personal homage, he presents a meditative installation featuring ten new mixed-media canvases encircling a century-old olive tree placed at the center of the former church. Specially conceived for the nave of St. Agnes, the exhibition resonates with the building’s spiritual history, creating a profound interplay of color, texture, and space. MON PÈRE evokes the essence of the father through its elements, the monumental scale of St. Agnes symbolizes his immensity, the paintings embody his solemnity and dignity, and the olive tree represents his longevity and strength. In this sacred dialogue between artwork and architecture, the exhibition invites quiet contemplation on themes of life, rebirth, peace, reconciliation, dignity, and harmony. KÖNIG GALERIE is delighted to present MON PÈRE, Bosco Sodi’s third exhibition with the gallery and his first in one of its Berlin locations. The title, which translates to “my father” in French, reflects Sodi’s ongoing exploration of materiality and spirituality. In this homage to his father, Sodi has created a meditative installation featuring 10 new mixed–media canvases surrounding a century-old olive tree placed at the center of the former church. Specially conceived for the nave of St. Agnes, the exhibition resonates deeply with the spiritual atmosphere and legacy of the building, offering a captivating interplay of colors, textures, and space. MON PÈRE evokes the father through the gravitas of Bosco Sodi’s works, along with the space, and the tree. The scale of St. Agnes invokes the immensity of the father, the paintings his solemness and dignity, and the tree his longevity and strength, all evoked in the dialogue between the works and their surroundings in meditative contemplation. KÖNIG GALERIE is pleased to present a conversation between artist Henning Strassburger and curator and author Björn Vedder. The discussion will explore the evolving language of contemporary painting, examining how abstraction and figuration shape our perception of visual culture. By reflecting on Strassburger's vibrant and dynamic works, the exchange will delve into the emotional resonance of painting in today's fast-paced visual landscape. Björn Vedder met Henning Strassburger at an international group exhibition in Bucharest, for which he wrote the catalog text. Since then, the two have often worked together. Vedder curates exhibitions, writes essays on contemporary art and books on philosophy. His most recent publications are "Das Befinden auf dem Lande. Verortung einer Lebensart" (2024) and "Rosa. Vom Zauber einer Farbe" (2025). The event will be held in German. We're looking forward to seeing you!
