Excellent science, made in Europe: This year’s winner of the Körber European Science Prize, Erin Schuman, shares exciting insights on proteins, nerve cells, and the human brain. 🧠 ▶️Watch the video now! https://lnkd.in/d6za_cqc Erin Schuman is a pioneer in neurobiology. She discovered that and how proteins, as critical building blocks of the cells, are locally produced at the interfaces between neurons. Schuman’s newly discovered mechanism has revolutionised our understanding of the brain and avenues of research into serious brain disorders. “It truly is an awesome feat that individual brain cell can process a thousand or more different streams of information independently,” says Schuman, who is Director of the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt, Germany. She will receive the Körber European Science Prize in Hamburg on 20 September. 🎥Want to learn more about the brain and its synapses? Science plays a vital role in addressing societal challenges. With the Körber European Science Prize and the Hamburg Science Summit, we help building an integrated science and innovation landscape in Europe. The Körber Prize, awarded by Körber-Stiftung and currently endowed with one million euros, is one of the most important science prizes worldwide – and the only one focusing explicitly on Europe. The Hamburg Science Summit, organized by Körber-Stiftung and Hamburg’s Ministry of Science, brings together decision-makers from science, politics, business and NGOs to discuss how science and innovation can contribute to a common European future.

A new article in Nature Magazine explores research breakthroughs of #KoerberPrize laureates. With a €1 million award, what opportunities lie ahead for the winners? 👉 Read the article (link in comment)! “The prize celebrates how amazing collaboration across European science is,” says Anthony (Tony) Hyman, Director at the MPI-CBG - Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, and winner of the 2022 Körber European Science Prize. 💡 Hyman discovered that proteins accumulate as ‘condensates’ in cell fluid through a process called ‘phase separation’. While such condensates usually form and dissolve rapidly, they can cause diseases such as #Alzheimers or #ALS when the dissolution process is disrupted – a discovery that “sent shockwaves through the community,” as Hyman recalls. 🏆 A condition of the prize is that 85% of the award must support new research. Hyman has been using his funds to pin down why proteins clump together, to aid drug discovery. “This work would not have happened without the #KörberPrize funding,” says Hyman. Importantly, the Körber-Stiftung, which has been awarding the prize since 1985, does not impose any restrictions on research directions. This goes against the standard paradigm that forces scientists to commit to an end goal, even though many breakthroughs are unpredictable. Instead, the #KoerberPrize gives scientists freedom and trusts they will do what is best for science and society. ⚡ Curious to learn more? How can Europe turn its scientific strengths into practical innovation? The #HamburgScienceSummit on 19 September will explore possible answers. Here's a preview: Plenary Table #5: Breakthrough and beyond: Cutting-edge research in Europe Peter Seeberger (Director, Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces Potsdam) Cordelia Schmid (Research Director, French National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology) Nicola Spaldin (ETH Zurich) Helen Czerski (science writer) Despite concerns about Europe’s ability to innovate, European universities and research institutions continue to be recognised for their scientific excellence. But while Europe continues to attract bright minds and produce cutting-edge research and scientific breakthroughs, it is failing to translate its scientific potential into marketable innovations. In addition to financial and regulatory challenges, there are limited incentives for academics to collaborate with industry and vice versa. At the same time, there are promising examples of scientists adding significant value to Europe’s innovation space by contributing to R&D networks, co-developing products with companies or even launching their own start-ups. How can we maintain and enhance Europe's scientific excellence while strengthening our capacity to innovate? The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina will be hosting a Roundtable on evidence-based policy at the #HamburgScienceSummit on 19 September 2024. Roundtable #4: Science and politics: The state of evidence-based policy in Europe Gerald Haug (President, German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina) Jette Bredahl Jacobsen (Vice-Chair, European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change) David Mair (Head of Unit, EU Joint Research Centre) Paweł Rowiński (President, All European Academies ALLEA) 💡 With Europe facing significant challenges and yet nurturing the ambition to increase its competitiveness and sovereignty, the integration of scientific evidence into decision-making is critical. As problems become more complex and information more abundant, it is often hard to distinguish facts from disinformation, or evidence from mere opinion. This makes it demanding for scientific advisors to transfer insights from science into political and societal contexts. The roundtable, organized by the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, will explore obstacles and best practices for producing, delivering, and taking up science-based advice. It will also delve into strategies for overcoming barriers to evidence-based policy and discuss how Europe can lead in grounding policies in robust scientific expertise. 🏔 The #HamburgScienceSummit is an annual conference that brings together scientists, policy-makers, business and think-tanks. Are breakthroughs in mRNA technology a template for R&I processes in Europe? Leading experts explore this question at the #HamburgScienceSummit: Plenary Table #4: The future of health: Medical breakthroughs made in Europe Iordanis (Danos) Arzimanoglou (former Program Manager Health and Biotechnology, European Innovation Council) Maria A. Blasco (Director, Spanish National Cancer Research Centre) Dr. Myriam Mendila (Chief Development Officer, CureVac N.V.) Vivienne Parry (Science journalist) Medical research is at a turning point. The COVID-19 crisis has shown that Europe is capable of efficient R&I processes, with the mRNA technology being the most prominent example. Part of the success story has been increased cross-sector collaboration between academics, medical companies, regulators, and financial incentives provided by government and private actors. At the same time, the crisis revealed barriers to innovation, such as poor availability and quality of health data, or problems in research and administrative infrastructures. This raises questions about the future of medical research in Europe: What breakthroughs can be expected from European medical researchers in the coming years? Is the COVID case a viable template for other R&I processes in Europe? And how can medical innovation contribute to Europe’s technological sovereignty without undermining global justice, particularly with regard to public health in the Global South? Please note: Anthony Hyman won't be able to join us at the panel. He will be repaced by Maria A. Blasco.
