🌱 Breeding innovation: Advancing plant traits through doubled haploid technology 🌾 Like many great discoveries, the doubled haploid (DH) technology started by accident. A scientist in India noticed that immature pollen grains in a sugar solution began to divide – an unexpected breakthrough that changed plant breeding. At KWS, we’ve taken that discovery and turned it into a game-changer. By carefully selecting starting material and controlling conditions, we’re able to breed plants with valuable traits like disease resistance and high yields. These traits are passed on, creating plants with identical chromosomes – all in much less time than traditional breeding methods. We’re not just focused on the next harvest – we’re #thinkingingenerations. Our colleagues in Buzet-sur-Baïse, France, are now part of an exciting initiative for more sustainable mobility 🚗 🌍. The partnership with Karos promotes home-to-work carpooling, at the initiative of the Albret community of communes. 👉 https://ow.ly/9jWl50TMyW1 Karos is the leading application for home-to-work journeys and already has more than 1 million users. Thanks to this partnership, drivers will be paid to share their vehicle for home-to-work journeys, and journeys will be free for passengers for 6 months. It's an ideal opportunity to strengthen links between colleagues and neighbors, while reducing emissions from traffic. Have a safe journey on all sides! #Sustainability #Seedingthefuture

At the heart of oilseed rape breeding 🌱 💛 #Oilseedrape is not only a stunning sight when in bloom, but also a very versatile crop that offers many benefits. At the same time, oilseed rape cultivation is facing growing challenges: While pests and diseases are on the rise, regulations on the use of plant protection are becoming increasingly stricter. For our latest “Breeding Story”, we visit our colleague Andreas Gertz, who leads KWS' continental oilseed rape breeding program. Together with the expert, we take a look at the challenges of the crop and explore the breeding #innovations that KWS develops to help farmers overcome them💡 Discover more in the new “KWS Portrait – 2024 edition”➡️ https://ow.ly/nyv150TOaOL You want to learn even more about that topic? A new #WorldofFarming story on resistance breeding in oilseed rape is in the making – so please stay tuned😎! #LetsTalkBreeding #seedingthefuture #futurewithheritage

Agriculture in particular is struggling with extreme weather conditions. Amongst many others, these can be prolonged periods of drought, while at the same time being the world’s leading user of the valuable resource of fresh water 💦. The question is therefore: What part can breeding play in ensuring that plants make optimal use of available resources and deliver stable yields even under drought stress ☀️? At KWS, our plant breeders 🌱 are already working on solutions for tomorrow – one example being sorghum. In doing so, they take advantage of sorghum’s natural ability to survive even in extremely dry conditions, for example by means of its deep and widely branched root system, which enables sorghum to draw water from deeper layers of soil. With the trend towards healthier and more sustainable diets, the demand for vegetables is growing worldwide🌍 Reason enough for KWS to further diversify its portfolio and enter the field of #vegetablebreeding. In 2019, we started our journey and began the development of a new Business Unit with various vegetable crops. How do you build a business from scratch? How far has the development of the business unit progressed? And how exactly are breeding companies integrated into the value chain? In the latest episode of our podcast “World of Farming”, we discuss these and many other topics with Simon Walter, Head of Business Unit Vegetables, and Coert Engels, Global Head of Breeding Vegetables 🎧 Listen to the episode here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eXygaFhd #seedingthefuture #WorldofFarming

This year wasn’t just about showing off our fields. It was about real conversations, bold ideas, and discussing practical solutions like our Magma Collection, Steady Sevens, Spinach 365, HighFive Baby Spinach and INITIO. Together with our partners, we sparked fresh ideas, discussed our solutions, and introduced our KWS Vital Pack™ to address vital challenges such as climate change, sustainability and shifting consumer demands. 𝗣𝗼𝗽𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲 🎥 At PopFest, we all connected through one language. 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵. We captured the highlights and customer experiences of the event in our aftermovie, giving you an inside look at how our solutions help shape the future of the vegetable value chain. Curious? What potential do modern plant breeding methods, such as genome editing, offer for greater climate resilience and food security? And what legislative developments can we anticipate from the European institutions on #NGTs? Our colleague Stefan Schwarz was part of a panel discussion at the World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit together with other industry experts. “We need to invest significantly in the further development of advanced gene-editing and breeding tools to realize the future possible potential,” he underlined. The event hosted by World Agri-Tech is one of the biggest European networking event. It brings together a great number of agricultural experts to discuss latest trends and findings on sustainability, climate resilience and innovation https://ow.ly/2cA550THwjW. #seedingthefuture #LetsTalkBreeding
