Sunny times at our breeding station in Kozármisleny, Hungary🌻 Recently, KWS sales, marketing and product development teams from Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Croatia met for the first "Sunflower Academy" 🎓 The purpose of the event, which will be held annually in future, is to enhance the knowledge of our colleagues in breeding and cultivating sunflower hybrids in order to provide even better agronomical support to our customers. The participants explored various aspects of the breeding process and learned about advanced technologies and innovative approaches of sunflower cultivation. The breeding station in Kozármisleny, located in a picturesque corner of Hungary, 20 km from the borders with Serbia and Croatia, is part of a global network of stations that enables KWS to create, test, and adapt various hybrids to the specific conditions and challenges of different regions🌍 Read more about sunflower breeding at KWS 👉https://ow.ly/wZRL50T31r0 #Letstalkbreeding #sunflower #sunfloweracademy #kwssunflower #timeforkwssunflower

Agriculture in particular is struggling with prolonged periods of drought, while at the same time being the world’s leading user of the valuable resource of fresh water 💧. The question is therefore: What part can breeding 🌱 play in ensuring that plants make optimal use of available resources and deliver stable yields even under drought stress? At KWS, our plant breeders are already working on solutions for tomorrow – one example being sunflowers 🌻, which have many natural mechanisms to protect them against drought stress. KWS tests its germination material worldwide to identify high-yielding varieties with the best drought tolerance. #LetsTalkBreeding #seedingthefuture

🌱 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻! 🌿 Our KWS Food Ingredients team recently had an incredible experience joining our breeders on a tour of our fields in Wohlde. During this visit, the team also examined yellow pea crops growing in the greenhouse. 🫛🌱 This hands-on experience, showcasing what it takes to grow our crops, provided a deep dive into plant breeding and pre-breeding techniques alongside our expert breeders. 💫The dedication and passion of our breeders were truly inspiring. Working closely with them highlights our commitment to co-innovation and upholds the highest standards in every crop we grow. Together, we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in the world of food ingredients. Agriculture is constantly facing new challenges: Climate and environmental conditions are changing, pests and diseases are spreading. Innovative plant breeding solutions are therefore needed more than ever. 💡 In our “World of Farming” we explain how pollen shedding can help against ergot. And why sugarbeet breeding is based equally on high-tech and handcraft. We show how the performance of catch crops can be measured and what role heat tolerance plays in bean breeding. GDM and KWS informed today that the transaction of the South American corn business 🌽 has been completed. Both companies are thus taking an important step focusing on their future strategic targets. “I would like to sincerely thank the teams in Brazil and Argentina for their commitment and ‘orange spirit’ they have shown in all these years. They have done a fantastic job in developing the KWS brand and our products to a best-in-class option for farmers in South America and I am convinced that they will form an important part of GDM's future growth ambitions”, Nicolás Wielandt, KWS Executive Director Board Member responsible for the Corn Segment, underlines. KWS will remain involved in South America and will run its breeding locations for vegetables and the counter seasonal breeding activities for different crops 🌎🌱 More background information on the transaction can be found here https://lnkd.in/dYwRkQGa #ThankYou #seedingthefuture

On July 24, Prof. Raphael Mercier was our guest in the "KWS Lecture" series. Raphael is the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) in Cologne, Germany. His lecture on "What limits meiotic crossovers" was highly relevant for us as plant breeders: Meiosis is one of the key components of inheritance, where genetic information is rearranged for the next generation. After the lecture, KWS researchers and breeders had the opportunity to delve deeper into the topic in a workshop led by Delphine Fleury, Alevtina Ruban, Nadine Schumann, Parastoo Hoseinzadeh alongside Raphael Mercier. It was discussed about the potential and current limit of using targeted recombination in plant science and practical (pre)breeding e.g., introgression of favorable genes (alleles) from plant genetics resources (PGRs), etc. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Raphael for his visit and the fascinating insights into his research. The strong relationship between KWS and academia, along with the mutual exchange of knowledge, is invaluable for our daily work in developing varieties for sustainable agriculture. Summer is the time to enjoy delicious, refreshing watermelon🍉😎! Archaeologists found remnants of watermelon seeds in a 5,000-years-old settlement in Libya for the first time. The wild variety was just 50 millimeters in diameter, weighed no more than 80 grams, could only be opened with a hammer, and its green flesh was extremely bitter. It took many generations of selection and breeding to turn it into the sweet, red-fleshed summer snack we know today. With its entry into the vegetable seed business 🌱one of the crops KWS focuses on is watermelons. New varieties are developed in Turkey and Brazil – important markets for watermelon and other vegetable crops . How do our colleagues in Turkey work and what is particularly important when breeding watermelons? Read more here 👉: https://ow.ly/VWw350SLU8z #seedingthefuture #Vegetablessquad
