Design and Optimization of Complex Technical Systems
Info
The research and teaching practiced at the Laboratory for Product Development and Lightweight Design is about engineering design, i.e., the creation of concrete solutions to specific problems. Design problems where the solution and its elements are entirely unknown are particularly interesting for us. These can be solved applying a so-called top-down approach, where the focus is on the desired features of the new product rather than on already existing solutions or their elements. We cover a large span of different quantitative and qualitative methods ranging, for example, from new numerical optimization techniques from lightweight design to Design Structure Matrices from product development. Application fields for our core research include but are not limited to: Robotics, Automotive Engineering and new products. In order to produce both applicable and scientifically outstanding results we closely cooperate with many partners from industry and academia. Explore the art of lightweight materials with us at LPL! This semester, five talented TUM student teams took on the challenge of designing and manufacturing carbon-composite beams to excel in a 3-point bending test. Each team brought their unique approach, blending traditional techniques with innovative designs to push the boundaries of what's possible with carbon composites. The culmination of their hard work was put to the test at our #LPL facility, showcasing impressive results in both stiffness and strength. Special thanks to Sergi Pagés and Ludwig Krämer for their coordination of the 'Practical Course: Composite Materials', https://lnkd.in/d_nDNrFW #CarbonComposites #EngineeringDesign #MaterialScience #LightweightDesign #StructuralIntegrity #LPL #TUM"

Congratulations to Dr. Yunzhe Zhang for her successful PhD defense on February 17, 2025! 🎓 Special thanks to Prof. Stephan Husung from Technische Universität Ilmenau for serving as 2nd examiner and to Prof. Johannes Fottner from TUM fml – future.meets.logistics. for chairing! Dr. Yunzhe Zhang developed a parametric CAD framework for automatic performance and cost assessment of technical products. Dr. Zhang successfully applied it to two industrial use cases where she automatically explored high-dimensional design spaces to identify an optimal solution for (1) an high-energy x-ray target wheel and a (2) rubber mount of a vibratory rammer. We wish Yunzhe Zhang all the best for her future. 📚🔬 #PhD #systemsdesign #CAD #design #lpl #costmodelling

Successful EXIST Funding: Symphera supported by LPL 🚀🔬 LPL provided professional and organizational support to Symphera during its EXIST startup grant in 2023 and 2024. The EXIST project was funded by the BMWK, with Prof. Zimmermann serving as a mentor. Symphera develops advanced surgical systems for laparoscopic procedures, automating tool-switching and eliminating manual instrument changes. With the press of a button, surgeons can seamlessly switch instruments—much like using a multipen—allowing them to stay fully focused. The goal is to streamline workflows, reduce operating time, and improve patient outcomes, aligning with healthcare trends that enhance operating room efficiency and surgeon working conditions. We congratulate the team on their achievements and wish them all the best for the future! #LPL #EXIST #StartUp #medical #mentoring

How to design space mechanisms for zero failure? We were delighted to welcome Dr. Uwe Christian Mueller to our Master’s lab course, Methods of Product Development, last week. In his guest lecture, Dr. Müller shared fascinating insights into the development and testing of space mechanisms. As mission failure is not an option, every component must meet the highest reliability standards—requiring rigorous design, testing, and validation. Thank you very much Dr. Uwe Christian Mueller and Airbus Defence and Space for the inspiring examples and valuable insights for our students! #systemsdesign #space #mechanisms #trl #design #requirements #lpl

#kostenmanagement #costmanagement #cost #productdevelopment #lpl
