Netflix’s live-action series “One Piece” is based on Japan’s highest-selling manga series by Elichiro Oda. Chu is a ruthless pirate and a fish man with deadly spitting powers seen in Series 1. dreamsmith.biz was asked to create a full body prosthetic based on the manga character and Jaco Snyman explains the process: “Taking the character from the manga into the real world, we sculpted Chu in ZBrush to see what it could look like as a real person. With the blockout design approved, we needed to run some tests to see how big we could make the character’s fish mouth. Referencing the manga character’s huge mouth, we sculpted prosthetic lips in skin color and tested them out on actor Len-Barry Simons to see how big we could make them without interfering with his speech and expressions. It worked really well and we had a lot of fun. We incorporated the final design into the digital sculpture, which was then made into a mold system. Once cast in silicon, painted and applied to the actor, it looked fantastic.” Read more about the project: maxonvfx.com/3YrHcON

“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Raised by Wolves,” and “One Piece” have one thing in common; prosthetic character artist Jaco Snyman and his company dreamsmith.biz. Having pioneered a digital workflow that uses #ZBrush to develop character concepts, create final sculpts, and design mold systems, the team can 3D print, paint and apply prosthetics, including face masks and cowls, hands, fins, gills, lips, creature teeth, headpieces, body armor, weapons and more. Maxon interviewed Snyman and digital mold maker Howard-Tripp to understand their process and get behind the scenes of how they created the Arlong character for Series 1 of the Netflix live-action adaptation of “One Piece,” based on Japan’s highest-selling manga series by Eiichiro Oda. Check out the full story of how they used ZBrush to sculpt and create the prosthetic for Arlong, maxonvfx.com/3Y3wNY9
