Temperature swing solvent extraction is an interesting method to achieve water desalination without membranes or evaporation. It uses solvents with temperature dependent water solubility, driven by moderate temperature swings. In particular, some amine solvents such as diisopropylamine show a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior that allows for such a process to be realized. Check out this paper by Ian Billinge et al., https://lnkd.in/enb-dZBn, showcasing a combination of difference pair distribution function analysis, small-angle scattering, and molecular dynamics simulations to provide direct evidence for the molecular cluster formation between DIPA and water that has been hypothesized to underlie the LCST phenomenon.
