Knit in Motion by Suzanne Oude Hengel seen in our SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIONS area: Born from frustration about past experiences within the textile industry and its unwillingness to stray from the status quo, Suzanne Oude Hengel founded Knit in Motion (KiM). Her goal: to push boundaries, experiment, and challenge the way things are done. KiM breaks down traditional notions of knitting by questioning, examining, and rethinking the craft and its applications, going off the beaten track to explore new territory within textile design. Suzanne’s graduation project (ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem), “Loop Coloured Feet” (2015), explores the potential of using knitting as an alternative material in footwear. It represents a starting point for many ideas that she continues to investigate including rethinking production methods, reviving older techniques, and focusing on craftsmanship. In a context where fast fashion is gaining strength among consumers and the use of synthetic and ephemeral materials is favored by brands, Alpaca fibre is becoming a bright spot for a more sustainable and eco-friendly fashion world. The use this fibre in Incalpaca’s garments and products allows them to show their customers that luxury and environmental responsibility can co-exist. The Re/Upcycle Alpaca project has been recognized in the German Design Awards 2024, organized by the German Design Council, which awards excellence in design based on innovation, industry impact and commitment to sustainability. At Incalpaca they are proud to have achieved the 'Gold' level in "Eco Design" category, the highest award in the event. This recognition underlines their commitment to sustainable innovation, the environment and our community. With Re/UpCycle, we can recycle more than 120,000 kilos of fibre per year and reduce the impact of their manufacturing process, promoting a green and sustainable business model.
